I've just looked online, deliberately choosing the most expensive shop in my area, and they have PK 3 seat recliners for £3k, reduced to £2,300 in their current sale.

How you get to £7k is beyond me....
  • For the people confused as to how it got to £7k - OP's parents bought a 3 seater, 2 seater and chair, all electric reclining. 3 seater depending on fabric or leather choice could go up to 3.5k, 2 seater more like 2k, armchair about 1.5k ish - easily £7000 for Parker Knoll.
For the OP, I am so sorry. If your parents won't let you help, there's nothing you can do. It's the customers responsibility to make sure they know what they're buying, and unless they specifically asked if the suite was lightweight and came in one piece with separate back and leg controls they don't have any right to reject or return it. I should add here that what they're asking for is physically impossible in an electric reclining sofa! They are always going to be heavy, sofas rarely come with dual motor separate back and leg controls, and in order to avoid horrendous problems with either fitting them through doorways or injuring the delivery drivers they will usually come in separate sections. If they're planning to move the sofas or chair around to clean it etc they should emphatically not buy a recliner. If they want separate back and leg controls, they should look for something advertised as "dual motor". But this will be very much a one or the other decision, and they should discuss it thoroughly with the store and get it in writing when they place the order.

  • Honestly, leave them to it.
There's nowt as stubborn as those that won't be told :)

The boss wants to get rid of the sofa even if she takes it to the local refuse tip, its going!  She wants to then waste more money on a sofa which she will complain about!

I like the fact you say the boss will be taking the sofa to the tip - make sure it is her that does it and not you.

There is no way I can get on the housing ladder like millions of others as I don't have the deposit.  Being on the South Coast makes it impossible with the prices around here are crazy. The only place where I would have a more of a chance would be to move up north, but of course that does not fit in with my mothers remit, as she wants to control everyone's lives and would still need a lot of money!  She says the north is grim, with awful people etc which is crap.
Do you currently live at home?
If your plans are to move out, then move out to where you can afford to get on the housing ladder - there are plenty of very nice places "up north" and many nice people there too.
If your mother wants you to live on the South Coast, what is she doing to facilitate the process?

On a more serious note, if your mother wants to dispose of the suite, suggest she contacts one of the charities which specialise in re-using/reselling secondhand or unwanted furniture
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales

I can attest as someone who grew up in Wiltshire (further south than London) and now lives in Scotland.

I'd kill for a sofa like that.  I bought a second hand less good quality one and it has helped my various back and leg problems., but its definitely past its use by date lol.  I have a wooden floor so it can be moved, it would be impossible on a carpet (but putting plastic caps on the feet would help with the moving problem). I did have carpet when I first bought the sofa set but quickly moved up my plans to change to a wooden floor when I realised I couldn't move the sofas to clean the carpet.

Sorry you are having problems with your mother, that's one problem I don't have.

"I cant do any more to help them!"

Please don't take this the wrong way - have they asked for your help?

I only ask because it is more common than you think that children can see exactly where their parents are going wrong and if only the parents would listen to them they could be helped.

Wow this is a lot to unpack, regarding “moving” the sofa have you look at gliders, you put them on the bottom of your sofa legs and it makes them easy to move, works especially well with recliners.

It is pretty much impossible to get a 3 SEAT sofa that reclines that is one unit. Due to weight, getting into modern houses and the mechanisms.

The recliner mechanism is the only logistical thing that can change, however if she’s happy to yet 10s of thousands at expensive luxury brand sofas while you can’t get on the housing ladder leave her to it
