Random SMS sent

Has anyone experienced where a text message is supposedly sent from your phone but you did not send it?  According to my mobile provider on Sunday I sent a text to 07520601000 at 2.30 pm. I 100% did not send it - I have no idea what this number is for and there is no message or even blank message as sent in my messages list. I am not worried about the cost - will come out of my allowance anyway - but I am very concerrned about the security aspect and how this could happen.  I have only just changed provider and this is not a good start!  My provider could offer no explanation either.  Help please.

I'd be worried if my phone was sending random messages - even if on an unlimited package.

I agree. It's even more worrying that the message doesn't appear in Sent Messages on the phone.

Imagine trying to argue with your network that you can't have signed up to an expensive premium rate SMS service (can be ££s/day) because no such sign-up message appears in your outbox.

EDIT : been reminded by a post elsewhere that a single sent text could have cost you a quid were you daft enough to be on Vodafone's PAYG tariff.

It can be an activation message for a service on your phone - for example, to activate iMessage and FaceTime on an iphone, an invisible text message is sent to a mobile number that then replies back and sets it all up - you don’t see the text going out or back in, but it happens. All UK mobile operators whitelist these kind of numbers so they are zero-rated and don’t charge etc so you have nothing to worry about.
I spent 25 years in the mobile industry, from 1994 to 2019. Worked for indies as well as the big networks, in their stores also in contact centres. I also hold a degree in telecoms engineering so I like to think I know what I’m talking about 😂
  • But why do they need to be "invisible"? Has the service asked for permission to send such texts (whether they are whitelisted or otherwise)?

No idea. Probably because it would cause unnecessary confusion…. For example, if you wanted to activate iMessage, would you want a warning that says a message will be sent and received in order to activate - when that message is free anyway? No you don’t - you just want your iMessage working….
