Changing Car Battery

I've got a 2016 Kia Sportage and I need a new battery. I've had various quotes including fitting, but all are over £100.00 and as I'm part exchanging the car on Saturday I need to get it done before then (I'm in North Manchester and I need to get the car to Newcastle upon Tyne on Saturday). My brother tells me it's very easy to do and looking at the Youtube videos it seems easy enough, although I am concerned that if I do it myself will I need to reprogramme the car radio or will it just work off the new battery. Also is it worth buying a 2nd hand battery from the local car scrap yard or is it likely to be dodgy? Should I just pay out and get someone to fit it for me.

Thanks for any advise.

What symptoms mean you need a new battery?

I would be putting the battery on charge every night till Saturday to nurse it to Saturday.

The car won’t start. Batteries been going for for a couple of months, since I felt the boot slightly open and therefore the lights on. It’s been jumpstarted a couple of times, but now it’s completely dead. Had the breakdown people out but they couldn’t get it going either. Told me it was completely dead.

Get onto Eurocarparts or similar in your locality.
Put your reg number in & buy the cheapest battery you can.
    Easy enough to fit.

  • If its a stop/ start requiring an AGM battery does it require registering?

It’s not stop/start. It is keyless though. Don’t know if that makes a difference.

Do you know what the battery size code is or can you tell use the exact model of Sportage you have?

Do car radios (sorry, "Infotainment Systems") still have security codes? As the vast majority are buried deep into the dash and the car's electronics, I doubt if it is worth bothering with any more if it's a modern car. If it does matter, you can get gadgets that connect to the car's battery terminals and keep an uninterrupted low current supply while you change the batteries over. Eliminates problems with radio codes, voltage-sensitive alarms etc.

Never used one, not a recommendation, just an example.

If the battery really is dead, it's too late for that.

There is a small product u can purchase plugs into cig llighter will be do enough to hold radio code. You can also get battery charger connect to battery terminals and ensure they hold a charge.
