What temperature should I set the heating to when I'm away?

Options
I'm going away for a week at half-term. It'll likely be cold, maybe just touching freezing at night, and I don't want to damage pipes/get damp/kill the plants.
What temperature would you set the heating to?

If your system has a frost-stat setting put it to that. It will only come on if there is any danger of freezing. Otherwise set it as low as the thermostat goes (10 degrees in on my system).
  • Thermostat goes right down I think! What temperature would a frost-stat setting normally be?

5C or thereabouts, although I'd probably set it to 10C if it was my house.

Our default Frost Protect temp on HIVE is 7C.

IF we ever manage to go away in winter again, I'll probably increase this to 10C. IIRC, that was the level stipulated by Home Insurance coy when my late sister's house was unoccupied for a few months in winter.

I was about to post much the same as badger - Hive is 7C.  My insurance on a currently empty, about to sell, estate property specifies 12C.

I personally set mine at 12C when I've been away at said property, clearing it, as this is a good compromise between frost protection and personal comfort levels.  I feel that if a place is too cold for a period if time, the very fabric of the building and contents stay cold for a while and take longer to get warm again.  However, having Hive allows me to put it back on to the normal schedule as I set off home, so it's getting back near normal feel when I land back.

most plants won't even notice, but the orchids in the living room hate the cold

I typically set mine to 14c as there's points in the house that can read 10c at that thermostat temperature and I really don't want damp creeping in.
