Combine utility and WC or keep separate?!

We are starting the process of renovating our kitchen!
Currently we’ve got a very small utility and downstairs WC/shower and are thinking of combining them to give us more streamlined storage space. We are removing the shower as lived here 2 years and have never used it!

What do people think?! Keep them separate or have a 2 in 1?!

I’ve attached a picture of our floor plan to give you an idea of the space.

Thank you!

As someone with children I would keep the downstairs toilet (as long as not a saniflo macerator type one) - really handy when they have been playing outside and muddy/painty etc and urgently need toilet! It really depends on the type of home and who it would appeal to I guess. Just my thoughts :)

  • Thank you! It is a family home and we plan to keep the toilet but just wondering thoughts of having a toilet in the utility room. So our thought is knocking down the wall between the two rooms - keeping toilet where it is but having units along the length of wall opposite.

I would keep both the toilet and the shower room, and try and make better use of the utility area (stack tumble drier and washing machine along the left hand wall, and have a butler sink alongside them).  Can you extend into the 'store'?

What is the Store used for and how is it accessed?

Can that area be incorporated into your plans?

A man walked into a car showroom.
He said to the salesman, “My wife would like to talk to you about the Volkswagen Golf in the showroom window.”
Salesman said, “We haven't got a Volkswagen Golf in the showroom window.”
The man replied, “You have now mate".

Was the whole area originally a garage?

Personally I would move the toilet into the store with a door that opens off of the corridor. Then make the existing WC and utility a utility room.
I wouldn’t combine the existing WC and utility into a WC utility as the door opens off of the kitchen - smells etc!

Toilet/utility is a fine if you want to prioritise laundry and storage etc.  I'm not sure how old your children are now, but I found a second shower was invaluable when they hit their teens. Teenagers in a bathroom enter a different dimension where time passes at a different rate to the outside world - my daughter's record was 3 and a quarter hours!

It kind of defeats the object of having downstairs facilities its tucked away.

Easy access from rooms and garden priority

What are you doing with the rest of the kitchen.

Potential for laundry and big larder in that space

Any side access you could knock out a door
  • The store is accessed from the driveway - still has garage door on. We intend to keep it as storage in the garden is limited so is very handy.

Kitchen plan is to move the doorway to the end of the hall, keep the units in a similar positive but add a breakfast bar to separate dining space!

Plan to move before children are teenagers. Have 2 bathrooms upstairs so 3rd shower isn’t needed

    I'd keep them separate.

I'd also keep the shower, but that is personal preference to some extent.  I'm particularly influenced by our second shower being rarely used, except in October out main shower was out of use until the week before Christmas (so 2.5 months) because the replacement part had to come from Germany and, well. you know, COVID or a ship stuck in a canal, or whatever.  In fact, whatever the cause, I was very grateful of the second shower.
