Is the problem not with the googlemail.com address.  It has to be gmail.com.  I seem to remember having a similar problem with Thunderbird

Shouldn't make any difference.  googlemail.com is a legacy thing but its still Gmail behind the scenes.   No different an arrangement to if you still have an MSN/Hotmail account and new ones are Outlook.com.

If your email address is older than about 2010 (and you were in the UK) it would have been a googlemail account - Gmail didn't become a thing until then, and it was the only option in a handful of counties for trademark reasons.  I believe the system was later changed - you got the option to move to a gmail.com address and if you didn't, email was redirected anyway to the new gMail version.

The issue alluded to here by the OP (since they say it doesn't work in Outlook either which rules out a Thunderbird issue) is almost always caused by the need to set up an app password for the account.

Would be an easy test though, to try @gmail.com rather than @googlemail.com as the email address/username.

(As an aside: Thunderbird, and Outlook (new versions) should use Oath2 to authenticate, so should launch a Google login/allow access page, rather than need an App password)
  • Google have recently upgraded/increased the security for google accounts, you may/will need a seperate app password for thunderbird ( or any other third party email program either on a pc, phone or other device )

On Chrome, go to your google account associated with the gmail account, security then app passwords it is there where you can generate an app password  which you then use within thunderbird ( or any other email program on any other device)  and the Gmail account you want to use instead of your regular Google/gmail password
