Can't get Thunderbird to work with googlemail.

I've been trying to set up my googlemail.account with a Thunderbird client but am not having any success. I originally used Thunderbird's autodetect method for an existing account but that came back with 'thunderbird failed to find the settings for your email account' error message. I then proceeded to manually configure with the settings suggested by google's support pages (imap enabled) and that didn't work either. I am currently using Thunderbird to get virginmedia emails but would like to get googlemails the same way.
Is anyone using Thunderbird with googlemail and if so what settings have you used?

I have both GMail and Hotmail accounts set up with Thunderbird 91 version.

There is lots of information here regarding settings and any problems which might occur.

    Good luck

Thanks for the link. I have already seen that but have decided to upgrade my thunderbird version to the latest 91. It was version 13 before which was supposedly the latest according to the client itself when I checked but I wouldn't be surprised if it was many years out of date.
Anyway with the 91 version I can get as far as the incoming and outgoing servers being recognised

    Incoming

    IMAPimap.gmail.comSSL/TLS

    Outgoing

    SMTPsmtp.gmail.comSSL/TLS

but the username is listed as my full email address which is a googlemail.com address and consequently I get a 'unable to login at server. Probably wrong configuration, username or password' message.

I'm using imap settings on the latest version, "sever name" imap.gmail.com, "user name" is email address.
    Hope this helps.

If at first you don't succeed, sky diving is not for you!
  • My Imap settings for the incoming server are server name imap.gmail.com, port 993, user name is my gmail address (including the @gmail.com), connection security SSL/TLS and authentication method OAuth2. For the outgoing server the name is smtp.googlemail.com, port 465, user name my gmail address (including the @gmail.com), authentication method is normal password and connection security is SSL/TLS.

With those settings it works perfectly.

I have used those manual settings and it still doesn't work. I guess my googlemail account is not compatible with Thunderbird(or Outlook which also fails similarly).

This won't be the case.  Something has gone wrong.  What are the exact error messages you are getting?  First of all I would try completely removing Thunderbird form your computer and remove all profiles stored in the user folders.  Then download the latest version from the Thunderbird website and re install it.

Have you reviewed the security settings of your Google account to check whether Thunderbird (as a third party application) has been granted permission to access your account?

Is the problem not with the googlemail.com address.  It has to be gmail.com.  I seem to remember having a similar problem with Thunderbird
