I get that Hastings isn't a charity.  Neither is Tesco.  And it was so much whether it's affordable or not.
What I don't understand is why would my insurance go up by about 25% and the OH's drop by 10%.  It suggests it's either us or the cars.  I guess it's as others suggest my price is being brought into line with boy racers.  Maybe I'll get some go faster stripes painted  on the side and get the hamster wheel a lube job.

Well i don't think your insurance is anywhere near "boy racers" prices which are much higher than a couple of hundred quid.

Don't forget your with two different companies so your company has decided that people in your group driving a VW up are higher risk while your husbands company have decided the opposite for his circumstances. Has he owned the car for a shorter period as that may be why the price has gone down the longer he owns it.

Just remember to declare the modifications!

If you are that interested then do a pair of dummy quotes... a fictitious you (different but comparable dob, name, postcode etc) with a VW Up and then the identical person with a Volvo. You can then tell how much is being driven by the vehicle and its characteristics. Its interesting not only to look at what the cheapest price is but how individual insurer's prices change (a bit more complex with brokers and other intermediaries)

When you do this you need to remember a lot of insurers will run an identity check through credit reports so the fictitious person will end up paying a higher price because their name address can't be confirmed so this can squew the price when you do a comparison this way.

But if you use the same data for both quotes then the same uplift for unknown person will be applied... what looking at is the proportional movement for the two different vehicles really.
