At a certain point the policy is priced on the driver not the car. Virtually the same price for me for a Porsche 911 or a diesel Golf.
So would the fact that I haven't had a ticket in decades and never had an accident (knock on wood!) count against me?  Can't say the same for OH whose price is going down rather than up.

I wouldn't say count against you but count in your favour. My point was that the 911 was as cheap as a family car to insure.

    Why?
Because Hastings think they can get away with it?
I nearly halved our renewal cost by shopping around. There is a guide to cutting your costs here.

  • If you insure a month before the renewal date you will get a better offer. Though you cannot do this if you get a new second hand car as you have to insure it on the day you  buy it.

Not sure this is now true given new customers cannot be charged less than a renewing customer and a renewing customer obviously only get one price as they don't control when the renewal quote is generated... typically it was less than a month before

Could be all sorts of things: inflation is on the rise, as are electricity prices, wages and so on.  Hastings aren't a charity and have to charge you something for the product.  The quote you've been given equates to £18.42 a month, which isn't much when all things are considered.  There has to be some sort of minimum price and insurance, in real terms, is the cheapest it's been for years.

I get that Hastings isn't a charity.  Neither is Tesco.  And it was so much whether it's affordable or not.
What I don't understand is why would my insurance go up by about 25% and the OH's drop by 10%.  It suggests it's either us or the cars.  I guess it's as others suggest my price is being brought into line with boy racers.  Maybe I'll get some go faster stripes painted  on the side and get the hamster wheel a lube job.

If you do get go-faster stripes, don’t forget to tell your insurer!

Best guess is that the insurers have a set minimum price for a policy, which is what you are paying.  It's not possible to break through the floor, in pricing terms, so the fact of you having another year's experience and additional NCB is irrelevant.  I'm in a similar position: my premiums have remained essentially static for years.  The floor price has been raised this year, taking you with it.

Your husband, by contrast, was paying something over minimum price as a result of being a higher risk driver with a higher risk car.  By hovering a few feet above the floor, so to speak, he is able to lower himself towards it.  His additional year of claim free driving is relevant, therefore.  Next year he might drop down again and pay something equivalent to you.

Just remember to declare the modifications!

If you are that interested then do a pair of dummy quotes... a fictitious you (different but comparable dob, name, postcode etc) with a VW Up and then the identical person with a Volvo. You can then tell how much is being driven by the vehicle and its characteristics. Its interesting not only to look at what the cheapest price is but how individual insurer's prices change (a bit more complex with brokers and other intermediaries)
