It worked! Almost free cooking

I was highly sceptical but purchased a wonder box. Stuffed it with polystyrene balls from an old beanbag and wadding from a pillow.  Did a test last night with boiling water and it kept above 80 degrees at 6  hours. So cooked a gammon knuckle with split peas and veggies.  Its absolutely scrumpy. Will experiment next with curry and chilli. So pleased....

  • It came as cotton covers with press studs and a reinforced cardboard box. If I'd realised how easy it was I might have tried to make it. There are patterns on the Internet which are quite complicated but this is just a big rectangular bag which goes in the bottom and a square pillow case which you stuff to fit inside the lid.
  • Ooh fab! I’m thinking of making one of these with a box, pillowcases & some thermal wool insulation from a veg box. Just need to find a stock pot as I’ve only got saucepans with handles… It’s such a great idea!
    Bread, and roses too.

I'd think a saucepan or normal pan would work just as well, just make sure there are little to no gaps between the pan and the insulation, and put the pan in in such a way that it's easy to lift out (with oven gloves).

  • How much will this save over a slow cooker as everything needs bringing upto temp to make it work properly.

heated slow cooker pot stuck in the insulation should do.

Most of the energy is bringing up to temp.
