Octopus Go tariff.

I am on the Octopus Go tariff. This is a fully renewable electricity supply. My assumption is that my electricity price will not change as no gas powered electricity supplies my home.
Thoughts?
I also have gas through Octopus variable tariff. I expect this to go up considerably.

Octopus Go is a 12-month fixed tariff. The rate will not change until the end of the fixed period.

It will not change immediately because it is a fixed tariff, but when your fix expires it will change to the current prices at that time.
If you believe that 'no gas powered electricity' is reaching your home then I fear you have failed to understand how the national grid works...

That isn't how a "renewable" tariff works. It simply means Octopus has purchased the equivalent units you've used as renewable energy and added that to the grid. Electricity price is still heavily influenced by gas price

A green tariff means that some or all of the electricity you buy is ‘matched’ by purchases of renewable energy that your energy supplier makes on your behalf. These could come from a variety of renewable energy sources such as wind farms and hydroelectric power stations. Some green supply tariffs are also nuclear-free.

There are only 3 energy companies that are recognised as renewable energy suppliers:
    • Green Energy UK plc
    •  Good Energy Limited
    •  Ecotricity
These suppliers are not subject to the Ofgem Cap. Have a look at Ecotricity’s prices.

Rather than start a new conversation, this one seems the most appropriate to recycle.

I have reviewed my tariff using last year's consumption (smart meter data) and compared Octopus Flexible single rate, E7 and Go. For my usage they are all very close, to the extent that it is probably within calculation margins.

So my next question is which one will be cheaper for me in the forseeable future. Both the Flexible rates (E7 and single) will increase in the next few months - not least because of the end of EPG.

I think Go is described as a fixed term tariff - does this mean that if I go on the Oct '22 tariff, it is fixed for 12 months from October, or from when I start? Could it change within that timeframe? (I think it is described as a 12 month fix, I can't access the tariff information for my area atm)

  • The rules relating to fixed may have changed for new entrants:

‘Octopus Go is a variable tariff, with your daily standing charge, quoted day rate and night rate per kWh (for 4 hours starting 00:30)’.

You are free to switch tariffs at anytime with no penalty but with the following caveat:

‘Whilst you can always switch from standard tariffs to smart tariffs if you decide it’s not for you, If you switch from Agile Octopus, Cosy Octopus, Octopus Go, and Octopus Go Green to another Octopus tariff, you cannot switch back to a smart tariff within 30 days.’

Thank you for this. But what does it actually mean? Is it variable in that it has two rates, or because it is no longer a fixed term tariff and the rates could change any time (with notice ) I am aware that Octopus changed some of their product names to improve clarity with the EPG.
