Where can I find the price cap units and standing charge please?

Hi all,

I've not been able to find these but know my usage is considerably lower than the "average household" of £1277 and it's hard to know whether my fix works out cheaper. I considered entering the usage in kWh for my electric and gas for the "average household" into the energy club to see what mine works out as. It's annoying the only real figures available are the "average household" ones, I really want to calculate my costs and usage on my fixed rate against what I would actually be paying if on the capped rate as I know it's less than the figures they use everywhere.

Is it not possible to add this to the cheap energy club even? If on the price cap you would pay x amount?

I know yes suppliers set their variable rates to within a pound of it etc but I'm desperate to know what "it" is in my particular case.

    https://www.ofgem.gov.uk/publications/price-cap-increase-ps693-april

From 1 April the equivalent per unit level of the price cap to the nearest pence for a typical customer paying by direct debit will be 28p per kWh for electricity customers and 7p per kWh for gas customers

    (with regional and supplier variation)

The actual amount you pay per unit depends on supplier and region.
If you are happy with approximations then typically 20p/kWh electric, 4p/kWh gas with a standing charge of typically 20 - 26p/day for each.
In April these will increase to typically 28p/kWh electric and 7p/kWh gas.

Excellent thanks, I think I'm region 14 so hoped to find a table somewhere for the rates for my region. It looks like my fix last month is fairly on par with the April cap but will do the maths later

If the average household will see the cap increase £693 from £1,277 to £1,971 at a rate of 7p Gas and 28p Elec then that works out at approx.

    Elec

    2900 * 28p = £812

    Gas

    12000 * 7p = £840

    Combined = £1652

If the cap is set at £1971 that is a difference of £319.

So are we looking at a standing charge of approx 43p per fuel per day to make up the difference, and if not the full 43p, some kind of significant increase to the SC.
  • An increase from 4p kwh to 7p kwh for gas would be a 75% increase.
With electricity going from 20p kwh to 28p kwh would be a 45% increase.

I'm struggling to square this with the headline 54% increase overall.

An average dual fuel user using perhaps more gas then electricity would see a 54% increase between the 2.

Yes, but that is very misleading. If this is the case then it should also be reported clearly that if you used proportionately more gas than electricity then your bills will increase a lot more.

What really gets my goat is that the government announce these things as if they are straightforward facts - £700 more on your bill, offset by £350 back - and it gets parrotted around as if that it the whole story. The reality for many people is that their bills will go up by A LOT more than this. And that's not even taking into account those who are still on fixed rates.

The whole business or reporting "the cap will go up to £xxxx is wrong.  they should just say "electricity is going up 38% and gas is going up 90% (or whatever the exact figures are)

Obscuration of the facts at it's best.
