It might be worth fixing now if you can.

We have just been notified by Shell Energy that our annual personal projection will increase by £1,258 on the 1st April,  this is a bit more than the £700 forecast.  Has anyone else had such a big increase and any advice on how to get this reduced.
It sounds as though your usage is above the average which the figures commonly used to illustrate the price cap refer to - in which case that explains why your increased sum is also higher. In the same way, someone using only £600 worth of energy across a year currently won’t see that £700 increase either, but instead closer to £300-ish. Remember - the cap is on the unit price you pay, NOT on your total bill.

  • Our Shell bill going from about £1900 a year on Flexible 6 to nearly £2800 a year on Flexible 7.

Fixed rates I've looked at are about £3500.

can someone explain how if energy prices are being raised by 54% (the cost per unit used) that we have received our forecast from BG & the cost per unit used is going from 3.927p to 7.276p which equates to approximately 85% increase & not 54% as everyone is being told?
    Am I missing something here?
  • The 54% is for a dual fuel customer.  At an individual fuel level gas is going up by more than 54% and electricity by less
  • Bulb. We're increasing our electricity day unit rate from 23.705p to 31.367p per kWh and our night unit rate from 15.282p to 20.221p per kWh. Our electricity standing charge is increasing from 25.739p to 51.711p per day.
Rates are going up by 32% and the standing charge by 104%. I can't actually afford to pay for this as I have all electric heating in my house. From 1st April I will be going back to solid fuel and wood and I will be boiling a kettle on my lpg stove. I also have a tent heater that's quite effective. I'm looking at ways to reduce my energy usage further so that I can take  a few things off grid. The outside light for the garden will be changed for a solar light. I might look at a small wind turbine or some solar panels to power some lighting. It's a shame. I haven't had the electric heating long and it was paid for by a government grant. I'm a pensioner and  just can't pay for it any more out of my pension.
    Don't mess with pensioners.

Any one know why the standing charge has increased by such a large amount?

Can anybody tell me  - if your energy provider puts up your D/D then do you have to pay that? Or can you haggle? We're with Octopus.
  • I'm only on electric, the other is oil. My electric bill is increasing by almost 50%, and i'm already on a flexible tarif. Dont understand how a high rate can get so much higher. Those coming off fixed rates must be getting a huge shock
