Add Sky Sports mid subscription, rolling contract?

Sorry this may be a dumb question. Looking to get Sky soon, there is a current deal for Sky Sports at £20 a month, but it ties you into an 18 month contract.
I'm only watch F1, so I don't like the idea of paying for 4-5 months when it's not being used. I know you can upgrade your package during your subscription, but if I were to add Sports, do they try and tie you into any min term or can I cancel it a month later?
Also do they normally do deals for existing customers to upgrade?
Basically, would I be shooting myself in the foot not taking the £20 a month deal as overall it would work out cheaper than whatever offer they give out to existing customers?
fyi - Not looking at NowTV, we currently have it.

If you already have Now TV would you not be better taking the sports option on there?0

It's not going to cost us much more to get Sky TV+broadband than what we're currently paying out for NowTV and separate broadband. Plus the wife is wanting the ability to record her shows again and this just makes it easier than getting say a Freeview+ box, and having to switch between devices depending on what content we want to watch.Plus I'm wanting to watch the races in 4K this year. If NowTV did 4K streaming it might have tempted me to stay.

I understand what you mean. Yes it would be great if NowTV did 4K streaming.
As I understand it, you can add Sky Sports on a rolling basis by ringing up Sky. It would just be at a higher monthly price. So rather than £18-20 for 18 months, it would more likely be £30-35 a month, but rolling where you could cancel the Sports when you didn't need it.
So it would be a case of working out how many months you'd be using Sky Sports as to whether it's cheaper to do either option. Sounds like you'd be fine doing it on a rolling basis.1 -
Sky charged £18pm just for the F1 channel last year, previously they had run special offers but didn’t last year. So 9 months (March to Nov) would cost you £162. So if you not interested in any other sports just pay individually for the F1 channel. All you have to do is get them a months notice to cancel the channel, so end October put in cancellation1

That's good to know thanks. Do we know yet if it's still £18 a month this year for the channel or is it normally after pre-season testing they offer it?

You do realise you can't just buy Sky Sports on its own? You have to have the basic Signature package and Sports on top even if its just one channel? You can on Now, but you can't on Sky.1
