Ecotricity

Hi, we got our 1st proper bill from Ecotricity in our new property that we have lived in for a year now. The old energy supplier to the house went bust and its taken a long time for Ecotricity (our old supplier in our prior house) to get hold of the account and bring us up to date - we have already paid the catchup. Our monthly bill is £200, which seems really high for two people. We don't have the heating on excessively perhaps on average a couple of hours a day. The rest of our heat comes from our woodburner. I spoke to Ecotricity who have gone through the meter reading with me and that's correct and they stated that there has been two price rises one in Oct and one in Nov. Is anyone else with Ecotricity and find their bills really high? is it worth switching (albeit no deals are being sold by other providers at the moment)?

Ecotricity is an expensive as they're a "deep green" supplier and not subject to the Ofgem price cap.
However the price cap will change in April (and will be announced tomorrow) and after that, Ecotricity might not seem quite so expensive any more.

  • Thankyou for your response. I am guessing there is nothing stopping Ecotricity increasing prices in April and still being one of the most expensive suppliers?
Its quite frustrating as all of these increases have been hidden with the catchup and its hard to see what is the "new normal"

Depends if your tariff is fixed or variable. You could try switching to another supplier on a capped tarriff - they won't advertise these but if you get on the phones or try British Gas live chat they might help you.

Correct, although wholesale energy prices seem to have plateaued and so Ecotricity will have little reason to impose a further increase. There's nothing special about April for Ecotricity (as they're not subject to the cap).

The cost of going with a green supplier
  • Hi ive been with Ecotricity for many years. its always been a little more expensive (£3-400) but ive stuck with it as I believe its an active way I can contribute to the future. However, in Nov, Dec .... I started getting bills of average £3-400 p month. I live on my own and im pretty frugal with energy use, turn things off, use a jumper before heating ect. This is an impossible rate to continue. I cant find anything online to help and all the comparison websites haven't updated the rates. Whilst the price cap is 28p the Ecotricity price is 33.5p. So a considerable uplift from the cap. They are now predicting my annual cost will be £4000. its usually around £1200. ANY HELP tips guidance greatly appreciated, and Martin it would be great to hear something on this from you. As I say all the comparison sites aren't either including Ecotricity or have a very old rate of 21p. Many thanks

The price cap is a bit over 28p (varies by region, see the links in my signature) so Ecotricity are roughly 5p/kWh more expensive.

Please can you tell us your Estimated Annual consumption (it should be printed on your latest bill) and full detials of your Ecotricity tariff. Are you dual-fuel or electricity only? What is your standing charge?
It's likely that you'll ne able to make a small saving by switching to a less-green supplier but, going from the information you've shared, you could still be looking at an annual cost exceeding £3000.
