Charge showing on late Father’s paid up mortgage

I am in the process of buying my Mum’s bungalow as she has gone into a home and has to use the proceeds of her home to pay for her care. My Dad paid his mortgage up on the property in 1996 and there is a charge showing at Land registry by Barclays Bank who the mortgage was with. If Barclays cannot locate the mortgage number how can this charge be removed ? I understand that the house cannot be sold until the charge is removed.

It'll be removed when Barclays figure out that they don't have a live mortgage account, probably needs to be directed to the "awkward problems" desk at the bank though rather than the usual mortgage admin people.

I wonder if it is one of these £1 balance mortgages that people had so that the deeds stayed with the bank?

Definitely needs to go to the grown-up "awkward problems" desk as @user1977 says

Can you find any paperwork at your mothers home to assist?

I have no paperwork with the mortgage number on . I know when the mortgage was taken out and have informed Barclays three weeks ago with all the other details by recorded letter . I have made 2 further phone calls to them and the customer advisors have sent further emails to the department that should deal with this type of request. I have had no acknowledgment that they have received my initial request by letter despite the customer advisor saying they should have acknowledged my letter after 5 days. I sent the letter on 14th January . I appreciate it may take time  but as yet have no proof that they have actually received my request.

Needles take a while to find in haystacks. I know from my own experience that storage of old documents is often in old WW2 aircraft hangers. Retrieving a single box is a momentual task and often has to be booked weeks in advance. Your parents deeds are likely to be stored within.
  • I had the same problem with a Lloyds/Halifax charge, I found that the bereavement department were the best people to deal with - they seemed to be able to bypass a lot of the bureaucracy and get me to talk to the right people.
Once I got to the right department, the charge was removed without any fuss.

Sorry, realise your Mum is going into a home - had assumed your Dad had passed away previously, apologies if that is not the case.

Nobody really needs to find a record of the mortgage - what they need to check is that the bank has no reason to retain a charge over the property i.e. an ongoing mortgage account, or perhaps a related guarantee.

Exactly, it's just not worth their while to go digging out old documents.
