  • I have used Dreamweaver in the past, but when I had to create a web page recently I didn't want to spend a fortune. My other half is a freeware guru and found KompoZer. It doesn't have as many features as Dreamweaver but worked well enough for me and was free!

Part of the Furniture Combo Breaker
Notepad++ and a good graphics editor is all you need

Wondered how long it would take for this to come out.

I use DW but would recommend Frontpage to start off.

Best idea is to buy a good book on html & css because no matter how good the wysiwyg software is you need a foundation level knowledge of those.

That is if you want to create a site for other people that work.

    Good luck

I have created two websites using Microsoft Word but wish to extend my experience so I can tell folks that I am an experienced web designer of a kind.

Don;t say you use dreamweaver then

FrontPage creates almost as terribly buggy code, as Word - mentioning either in a professional web designer sense, and there'll be a lot of sniggering

You can spot pages designed in either, almost instantaneously. Especially ones using hideous proprietary MS plugins for FrontPage.

The book route and a good application will stand you in much better stead, if you are serious.
  • I could reply to each and every one who posted here but I think it is fair for me to be grateful for all comments placed here.

I am not a serious web designer but I do belong to community organisations and I constantly come across dodgy looking websites.

Personal websites are not so bad but for business, forum, two sided communications and more, I am happy to admnit one would need a little more professional touch and I am not that brainy.

There is no way I am ever going to fork out £300 for a program.
Kompozer looks good so I am going to play around with that provided I don't get disturbed over the two day Xmas days off.
I have never taken what you see is what you get programs very seriously but I will be eyeing this one up.

I do not plan to offer myself as a designer to potential employers, only those who believe webmasters cost a fortune. Even now I am still not serious and will make those people do most of the work in terms of literature content, name choosing and supplying some graphics.

I have seen a couple of people pay so called web designers only to have found their money taken and runners done.

Degrees are not a waste of time.
To me they are a show of how big ones brains are and I am not that brainy.
For the doubters, pm me to know what my website is called.

I do not wish to start a great debate here. I will only lose.
I only came here to ask what dreamweaver was all about, to confirm what I thought as most programs cost within the £30 region and to see if it was easy enough to use which it appears not to be cos I kinda like automation in many ways.

:oIf I fail to thank you individually, I am sorry. Your advice was appreciated but may not have been 100% the result I was after.

That's dreamweaver 8 for < £40 which is perfectly fine for what you want, and a link to w3c - the guys who make the web standards up and provide useful tutorials on web design. Dreamweaver is normally floating around ebay for that kinda price.

Most colleges/unis will teach web design using dreamweaver. They'll also point you in the direction of w3c for further reading. I'd look around for a video tutorial if possible, basically because it's not as dull as reading. Something like http://www.lynda.com/search/?q=dreamweaver&btnG.x=0&btnG.y=0&btnG=Search

I did web design as part of a degree, I'd say I'm now at a level similar to what you wish to achieve. I can do homers and stuff but I'd need to be trained up some more to work in a big firm.

I wouldn't say that eBay link is very legal, looking at his history, he is selling lots of suspect items, many of which are trials with "info" to illegally convert to real versions.
I quote from the listing, "I am selling the FULL version of Dreamweaver 8, due to recent company upgrades." It is illegal to sell a version you have upgraded from if it forms part of the reduce price upgrade. E.g. if you upgraded from the CS2 suite to CS3, using the upgrade offer with the reduced cost, your CS3 upgrade requires your CS2 serial number. You cannot then sell CS2 on.
If of course they have abandoned Dreamweaver for a competitive product then it is ok, but when then is it download only? Highly suspect.
  • Mr Vincent,

Good luck with trying Kompozer. I had to fish it out recently to knock up a quick page to advertise a car. I'd forgotten most of it but found the help files very useful :D

PM me if I can help at all

  • I like dreamweaver, pretty easy to use and does what it says on the box, I built my websites with it, I had no web building experiance before I used it and got pretty good results, Google likes it, I'm number 3 in the world for "adult humour", don't know how.....give it a blast, better than word....well, what isn't

    Highly suspect.

I agree, looks like he's been taken down now. I'll have to admit it was a bad post from me really.

Saying that, similar legit deals do appear on ebay.

Personal lesson learnt: don't give anyone with feedback like that the benefit of the doubt.

    ;)
