Hi there, I am currently with EDF on variable rate. I've recently had free solar panels installed (government grant due to being on low wage). I'd like to sell electricity back to the grid but was told by EDF that I can't do this until I have a smart meter, and EDF doesn't know when they'll input a smart meter....  I know the main message from Martin is that there's no point in switching at all at the moment, but does anyone have any idea how I can work out who to switch to, who would be able to provide me with a smart meter???
A smart meter installation will take the same amount of time whoever you are with as it would not be EDF who install it themselves anyway. Put in a request, chase it periodically, but the reality is that it will be 3-12 months before you get one.
Had a smart meter installed 10 days ago and the technician was from EDF.

    Thanks for asking.

I had a SMETS1 smart electricity meter installed by Eon in 2015 which went dumb when I switched away. I was with Zog for my gas at that point so no gas smart meter was ever installed. Last year my electric meter was enrolled into the DCC and was finally active again when I joined Pure Planet in July.

The EDF engineer did say that there was more work because of my existing leccy meter and he had to install a comms hub as well. He set it up to work in smart mode and I have been able to view everything on the IHD from day 1 or 2. The meter was installed on the 4th Jan and I received info on my account on the 5th to say it was up and running. I can also confirm that the readings match the billing as I requested my first bill yesterday and the latest reading taken by them is correct. My eletricity move from Pure Planet to Shell also seems to be OK as I can see daily electricity usage from the 28th Jan but I had been supplying manual readings up until that point.

I also have now got two separate IHDs.

I have never used the Bright App so have no idea what that would show for me.

Thanks for the info. My EDF account doesn't even acknowledge that I have a smart meter, still shows the old one. Unable to give readings as the meter serial numbers don't match. Still nothing on the IHD and the Gas Proxy status is still 'installed not commissioned'.
Been told to allow 10 days for the account to be updated. I've a feeling I will be waiting a while...
Exact same issue for me. Smart meter was installed by EDF 10 days ago, and IHD has never displayed any usage data. IHD is however showing a proper time/clock after a reset, so it's getting its data from the meter. Meter itself (green display) is showing my correct tariff (peak and off peak) so has received data from EDF.

I have contacted EDF twice, and they asked to wait... When going online, no trace of the new meter. Old meter is still linked to the account and old manual readings...

Allow me. The App also extracts the tariffs from your meters, and the graphs below can also be changed to show 30min; hourly; daily; monthly and annual costs.

When a smart meter is installed it has to be commissioned. Once commissioned, the smart meter communications hub will connect via a wide area network (WAN) to the DCC Network and it will establish a secure home area network (HAN). Your IHD connects to the HAN not the WAN.

There are a raft of industry processes that the supplier has to undertake before it can pull data from your meter. Firstly, the National Database has to be updated to show the supplier change. Secondly, through The DCC, the new supplier has to send out bespoke security certificates to each of your meters. These are part of the GCHQ-level layered security applied to the smart meter system. Think of it like this; an Amazon man arrives at your door with a parcel; your front door is only programmed to open if it is expecting a parcel from Amazon. If not, it will remain shut.

FWiW, I have had SMETS2 meters for 2 1/2years. Ten days ago, My transfer of supply to a new supplier went through. I am still waiting for them to formally 'takeover' my meter so that My Account shows daily 30 minute usage.

Having said that, I can access all the information that I need via the App  - BRIGHT. Try it.
