Want a smart meter

Hi there, I am currently with EDF on variable rate. I've recently had free solar panels installed (government grant due to being on low wage). I'd like to sell electricity back to the grid but was told by EDF that I can't do this until I have a smart meter, and EDF doesn't know when they'll input a smart meter.... I know the main message from Martin is that there's no point in switching at all at the moment, but does anyone have any idea how I can work out who to switch to, who would be able to provide me with a smart meter???

A smart meter installation will take the same amount of time whoever you are with as it would not be EDF who install it themselves anyway. Put in a request, chase it periodically, but the reality is that it will be 3-12 months before you get one.busysquirrel said:Hi there, I am currently with EDF on variable rate. Last summer I had my smart meter installed by EDF. I applied through their website and it took a couple of months.I guess you've done this but don't have a date from EDF yet?N. Hampshire, he/him. Not true at all. Octopus were quoting a 6 month + wait whereas British Gas fitted one within 3 weeks of joining. I'm now happily paying 5p per kWh overnight on Octopus Go.MattMattMattUK said:

I'd see if you can persuade BG to let you join on their standard variable tariff and get the meter fitted ASAP.0 -
I would guess some have their own meter fitters and smaller companies use the DNO fitters?A forum member here was told last year the was a 6 month waiting list due to pandemic, possibly just an excuse, I forget what company it was.0

I had my Gas account moved from Zog to EDF due to SOLR. Zog never installed smart meters so I didn't have one for my gas supply. My EDF online account was up and running about the 25th December and a couple of days later the option to book a smart meter appointment was available having expressed an interest via the My Account online. The smart meter was fitted on the 5th January.

Had you already got a smart leccy meter ? And, if so, did the EDF appointed fitter set the gas meter up to work in a smart fashion ??FishInGlass said:I had my Gas account moved from Zog to EDF due to SOLR. I'm interested in this too. I was moved from Zog to EDF and EDF installed a smart meter 28th Jan. The Bright app shows that my meter has been commissioned as is the electric meter (installed when I was with Symbio now EONnext) and comms hub but the gas proxy shows as 'installed not commissioned'. Currently gas usage doesn't show on the IHD and my EDF account still refers to the old meter. @FishInGlass how long did it take EDF to update your account?brewerdave said:

I was with Zog for my gas at that point so no gas smart meter was ever installed. Last year my electric meter was enrolled into the DCC and was finally active again when I joined Pure Planet in July. The EDF engineer did say that there was more work because of my existing leccy meter and he had to install a comms hub as well. He set it up to work in smart mode and I have been able to view everything on the IHD from day 1 or 2. The meter was installed on the 4th Jan and I received info on my account on the 5th to say it was up and running. I can also confirm that the readings match the billing as I requested my first bill yesterday and the latest reading taken by them is correct. My eletricity move from Pure Planet to Shell also seems to be OK as I can see daily electricity usage from the 28th Jan but I had been supplying manual readings up until that point.I also have now got two separate IHDs.I have never used the Bright App so have no idea what that would show for me.

Thanks for the info. My EDF account doesn't even acknowledge that I have a smart meter, still shows the old one. Unable to give readings as the meter serial numbers don't match. Still nothing on the IHD and the Gas Proxy status is still 'installed not commissioned'.Thanks for asking.I had a SMETS1 smart electricity meter installed by Eon in 2015 which went dumb when I switched away. Been told to allow 10 days for the account to be updated. I've a feeling I will be waiting a while...0 -
I was moved over to octopus after avro failed. I think it completed in early november. I got an email the week after asking if I wanted a smart meter - we will be moving house later this year so I thought why not, leave the new guys a present. They fitted the smart meter in december so just over a month wait.
That being said, we are in feb and it still doesnt function as a smart meter, I did get a msg on the IHD once but there is no account details on there and it doesnt phone home. Still, it means I dont need to go ratching under the stairs with a torch to submit my readings as the IHD gives them so that is a bonus.
Octopus didnt screw up my billing either.0
