So why does the same Sainsburys hold £1 on one of my cards, but £100 on another?

One is Visa and one is Mastercard.
Is one a debit card and the other a credit card?

Regardless all that's happening is that the fuel supplier is validating your card and for the higher authorisation is making sure that funds are available to cover what you can spend. You'll recall that when the Pay At Pump process finishes authorising your card it informs you that your max spend is £99 or £100.

Because it's a pre-authorisation it reduces the available balance on your account until the actual amount hits the account and when all the dots are joined up the correct amount is debited from the account. These days for VISA Debit transactions that normally happens by late afternoon the following day. I bank with Nationwide and any VISA debits clear by 4pm the next working day, not the three days that it traditionally took.

  • It is old news, OP, but it catches people out.  There was a thread here before Christmas whereby a poster was caught out recently same as you.

It's happened to me only yesterday although I use a crefit card for the transaction. The £100 is still showing today as a pending transaction, yet I only purchased £38 worth of fuel. This was at Morrisons. This was a visa credit card. Two weeks ago, I used a Mastercard at Tesco and that was a £1 pre auth.

This has been happening for a long time now..?
  • This started a month or two ago.
For debit cards it’s £100 unless when it checks with your bank, your bank balance is say £50 that’s what it will authorise.
    Credit cards £100.
The only way to stop it is to pay at till. I know not an option at some sites.

Seems you spoke to a rep that either was not paying attention or did not understand your question.
As the amount that debits is the amount of the fuel you took. So, Unless that is more than your account balance there are no overdraft charges...

No one is getting charged for anything that is in their control.

Overdrafts only apply to debited funds. NOT authorisations. 👍
The chap I spoke to could see that my bank balance had decreased by £100, although the payment was marked pending had I gone overdrawn then I may have had difficulty using my debit card until funds were back in the black. Although this does not affect me I can't believe VISA or Mastercard would impose this on low income households?

Good job you do not live in Europe then. This has been standard practise for at least 10 years... Seems only the Brits are not happy about it. 🤷‍♀️

last time I checked, the UK is in Europe :)  I've just read an article by MSE which states that this system could prevent people from paying bills whilst waiting for the pending process to be actioned, wherever you live this seems a tad unfair.

Anyone who struggles with this system can go to a manned petrol station then, problem solved
  • Having checked my credit card account today, the balance has been adjusted to the amount of fuel purchased. It was 24 hours from putting my card into the pump.

While I can see this would affect some users of debit cards on low incomes, as PP have said, it is safer to use the kiosk. At least there is an option. Where I live, we have two Texaco garages and the nearest supermarket is 20 miles away.

I'm certain now OP, your balance has been adjusted.

Funny how they can request "too much" instantly, but correcting it to the lower amount takes hours or days, isn't it?
