£100 for £20 petrol
This is probably old news but I went to Sainsbury's today to put £20 worth of petrol in my Little Aygo. I used the pay at pump as I normally do at ASDA or Morrisons but today I used Sainsbury's. When I got home I went on to my bank and spotted a pending £100 (not £1.00) from Sainsbury's and my account balance was £100 less.
I telephoned my bank and was told this is a policy by VISA and MasterCard and Sainsbury's have opted in. When talking to the advisor I asked what happens to those that do not have £100 in their account and no overdraft agreement? He told me the automatic overdraft charge would apply! He then advised me to change stations or to pay in the kiosk.
Surely this can't be right, there must be 000s getting charged for something out of their control?

Surely as it is only a pending £100 (which is never actually taken), you are not put into your overdraft.4

Seems you spoke to a rep that either was not paying attention or did not understand your question.
As the amount that debits is the amount of the fuel you took. So, Unless that is more than your account balance there are no overdraft charges...
No one is getting charged for anything that is in their control.
Overdrafts only apply to debited funds. NOT authorisations. 👍Life in the slow lane3 -
