Yes, exactly. After 'drilling' through the plasterboard you can extract the plug and cut the drilling part off to make the plug a little shorter.You can consider 'gripit' sort of fixings -but they will work only between the 'dots' of the adhesive, that is very unpredictable. And the gap has to be deep enough.
