Moving in Feb- fixed price energy or variable rate? Can you keep current tariff?

For those moving in the next month or so, what are your plans regarding energy tariffs at your new home?
I will be coming off a £120/month 2 year fixed which has 18 month left on it 😫
Are people planning to fix or go variable rate?

Has anyone been able to keep their fixed price tariff when moving house?  Is this even a possibility?   Our current and new house are both supplied by Eon and we are literally moving 3 doors down the road.

The new house has a floor standing boiler which is probably as old as me so I'm nervous about the bills at the new house

You can ask to keep it. Given they will be losing money hand over fist over you I doubt you will get it, they will be glad to be rid of people on those rates.

This is more suited to the Energy board.

I don't know if Eon will let you transfer a tariff. If they won't and you have to sign up again and you try to do it online you will probably only be able to sign up for new fixed tariffs. which according to Martin Lewis are all currently higher than the expected standard variable tariff (SVT) rise of 50% in April (the open market fixed tariffs anyway). They do not have to force you on to a fixed. Call them to set to up an account and insist on staying on the SVT.

ETA: according to this link they will let you https://www.eonnext.com/help/moving-home#:~:text=If we're your energy,a property supplied by us.
  • You should be able to transfer the tariff. BG say you can. I am on a fantastic fix until march 2024 so I am expecting to take it with me or put up one hell of a fight.

Thank you - yes I realise its very much an energy question but I wanted to try and get the view of people who are imminently moving rather than just get lost in a swathe of energy posts.  Thanks for the link - I'll take a look.

So to update, it appears you can keep your existing fixed rate tariff for a house move.
Just waiting to complete but eon are making all the right noises.

It depends on your current provider and who is the provider for your new property. If they are both the same then it should be seamless if they are different that is were it gets sticky. You would need to open a new account with whatever provider currently supplies the property for 21 days while the switch to your chosen provider happens.

Just wanted to update that after a lot of stressing and a few glitches along the way, we were able to transfer our existing fixed rate tariff to our new address.

If anyone is moving, please make sure you look into this with your provider.   We moved eon next to a house that was also already with Eon next - not sure if this made a difference.

I moved house supplied by Eon Next to Scottish Power. Eon Next wouldn't let me set up with them at new house on my fixed tariff, so have had to stick with variable tariff with SP :(

Oh that must be so frustrating- their website specifically says they'll make it easy to transfer your existing tariff.  Maybe we were just lucky that the new house was already supplied by eon next.

This is the reason why you were likely able to transfer your existing tariff. When you move into a property you have to give the existing supplier 21 days notice of switch, this means you create an account with the supplier to enable you to pay for your usage in the 21 day period. Your existing supplier would no doubt want you to close you existing account so that they can set up as the supplier in the new property.
