Travel to Spain updated restrictions

Morning Everyone,

My partner and I booked a last minute holiday to Gran Canaria on (23rd January 2022). Prior to booking the holiday we contacted Jet2 in order to double check we could both fly, at this time they stated we could and we booked the holiday.

Our dates are 6th till 20th February.

We contacted Jet2 the following day as we found out the travel requirement could be changing prior to departure, but they said if we cancelled we would lose all the money.

If you’re travelling on or after 1 Feb 2022, you must have had your final dose of the vaccine within 270 days of arriving into Spain. If you’ve received this more than 270 days prior to travel to Spain, you must be able to show proof of a booster jab (which must have been taken at least 14 days prior to travel).

My partner and I both have been double jabbed, but my partners last jab was in April last year. They couldn't get the booster in time for the holiday due to having covid. They now have the booster, but not 14 days prior to travel. Due to this, we would not be allowed in Spain on these dates. I can't move my annual leave dates in work as its allocated time off.

Has anyone else experienced this situation.

I booked the holiday using a credit card, but they are saying its down to the travel provider discretion.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

This change in EU rules was first discussed on here over a month ago, so hasn't been belatedly introduced since last week:

Unfortunately I don't believe you have any claim against either Jet2 or your card provider, and travel insurance is likewise unlikely to pay out, but if you have clear documentary evidence that Jet2 definitively advised you that you satisfied February requirements (while knowing your specific circumstances) then they may be prepared to make some sort of gesture for misleading you....

If your partner had Covid very recently, have they got the certificate on their NHS app to confirm this? Possibly Spain might accept this? I have one of these on my App, but I am not sure which countries allow it.

Even if Spain cannot accept this (and note that the rules for mainland Spain are not always the same as for the Canaries!) some other country might; so worth exploring whether you could change the destination country. Egypt (Sharm el Sheikh) seems to be very relaxed about Covid rules, offers plenty of sunshine and no visa is required for Sinai.

You should be able to change the date of the holiday with Jet2 to later in the year to give your partner enough time to get the booster +14 days.
    • Each date change has a £35 administration fee and if the price has increased you will be charged the  difference in fare.

They accept proof of recovery if the case falls under an exemption, which the person in the other thread linked above was claiming. That person was unvaccinated but wanted to visit family.

People cannot use proof of recovery for tourism purposes.

    I'm sure for tourism.

For family reasons (including in some cases involving British family members of those covered by the WA) there are exemptions.

Tourism is not essential travel, where other travel is. Spain will therefore follow the rules for non-EU nationals in their decision making for British citizens.

That makes more sense - he was travelling there following a bereavement.
