RobM99 said:EH - only one apple worth buying. Pink Lady. I had a couple last night but that's another story (Not really!)
Though I will say that the apples from our tree make a fabulous crumble - and I'm sure they are golden delicious.13 -

We are eating out of our freezer and cupboards at the moment.
Not really because of funds but I need to empty and defrost the freezer ready to do a lot of batch-cooking: bolognaise, chilli, shepherds pie bases, corned beef hash, dhal.
So our food spend is quite low atm but I'm scared to think of the cost when I need buy mince, chopped tomatoes etc.14 -
I'd be in on the cheese and gin as wellAs for feeling the pinch, we did a Sainsbury shop today and spent £45. Everything continues to creep up here and there. Sadly due to my health issues I am finding we need to buy a couple easy to prepare options each week now as I'm in too much pain some nights to be able to do much and my partner is knackered from a long day of work, doing the housework, looking after me, and sorting out his late father's estate. So, we've decided to use it as an opportunity for DP to have a pizza night (I don't care for pizza) and I chuck chicken thighs and veggies in the air fryer to roast. We've also bought some breaded fish and breaded chicken which can sit in the freezer until needed (far cheaper than a takeaway).Today we're having roast chicken, tomorrow we'll have some cold with chips and salad, I'll make chicken soup with the carcass, and DP can have chicken sandwiches for work.Grocery budget in 2023 £2279.18/£2700Grocery budget in 2022 £2304.76/£2400Grocery budget in 2021 £2107.86/£2200Grocery budget in 2020 £2193.02/£2160Saving for Christmas 2023 #15 £ 90/ £36511

I live in the Garden of England (Kent ) and sadly far too many orchards have been ploughed under to provide housing in the county now.I like Cox's given the choice or at a pinch Gala, which by the way keep for weeks in the bottom veg box in the fridge.
Unfortunately unless you are lucky enough to live near to a farm that sells their apples, or in my case about half and hour from Brogdale which sell specialised apple types, then there isn't a great deal of choice in the supermarkets.
I do have a few friends who provide me with windfalls which I peel, slice and cook in honey, then when cold, freeze for Jan-Mar crumbles and pies.
Last time I was in a supermarket (end of September ) they had Bramleys that were a decent size but an horrendous price. I am off to Devon next week for five days and I'm hoping I may be able to bring some home with me when I return.
I've been using up as much as possible stuff from the fridge, and will live from the freezer until Wednesday morning when I go.
So far my NSDs have been 9/30 as I've not gone near to a shop this month.
My 'squirreling' supplies will more than last me and I will do a main shop when I come home.
Just off to DDs for Sunday dinner, I shall take the rest of the fresh stuff that I won't use to her house for the family to use up.

A house on the way back from church had a bucket of bramleys outside today. I took three. Yesterday I got three quinces for £1 so might make pies.14

Another one here who loves cheese and gin - sadly, the gin doesn't like me!
Being reliant on SMs I tend to buy the bags of fun size apples, although it's pot luck as to what variety comes. Usually, they're fine and last for ages in the salad drawer of the fridge. Yep, the price of Bramley apples is extortionate. I prefer them for apple pies but the price has to be a deciding factor. Sometimes I'll buy just one and pad it out with chopped pears, dried apricots or mincemeat.
Yesterday we went for our Covid boosters. If I'd been on my own I would have walked there and back but, with DH in tow, because of his poor mobility, we had to get taxis. That was a shock to the purse strings - £10.60 - for about a quarter of a mile each way.It seems there's a starting price of £5.10. Good job I have a "taxi pot" that receives 50p a week for the rare occasions when we need one.
Roast pork today for dinner - a shoulder joint - with the last of a sweetheart cabbage, mash, onion gravy and hm stuffing. There'll be enough meat to freeze in gravy for the hm ready meal stash. I'm hoping for a pot of dripping too.
Tomorrow or Tuesday I'm taking myself off to the SM for odds and ends that I can't get online. I'm not a fan of shopping at the best of times but just occasionally I do enjoy a mooch around.Be kind to others and to yourself too.15 -
We've got shoulder of pork too @YorksLass but I've got in the SC with a home made BBQ sauce. We're still going to have roast potatoes and veg plus some corn on the cob and home made coleslaw.
There will be plenty of LOs, some of which we'll have in a couple of days time in rolls with wedges and probably more corn on the cob as had some in my Lidl £1.50 box and my friend had some in hers but doesn't eat them - think there's about 8 in the fridge at the moment to use up!
