I too wonder why so many people walk along in the mornings with a Pret, Starbucks or Costa cup, unless they're away from home and staying in a hotel for work and havent got access to a travel mug.ladyholly said:I, for one, dont understand the need of many people to need drinks all the time. You never used to see people carrying coffee, bottles of water etc. Ok I can understand the water when it gets hot but otherwise it just seems a huge waste of money. What I find even worse is the number of parents wh round here take their children to a well known restarant who do unlimited breakfasts before school.. My DGD works there not to mention the queues at Maccy D about 9.30 am.Can anyone enlighten me?#39 - Save £12k in 20257 -
Haha my brother and I used to be given hot lemonade too! Also my mum would never take us in McDonalds when it first came to the UK, citing it as junk food that was bad for you. The only time we ever went was to another kids birthday party there. She did take us to BHS cafe every now and again for a treat though.YoungBlueEyes said:Any sign of being I’ll or at the first whisper of a complaint, we were given mugs of boiled lemonade (which is quite nice actually). Only once an illness is in evidence were we given lucozade (which we all called puke-o-zade).Made my stomach flip just typing that!#39 - Save £12k in 20256 -
There was a little cafe that we’d go to as an absolute treat. Drinking out of little teacups, we felt so swish!Re Mac Donald’s etc - I remember asking father why we never went in them (Wimpeys etc as was, this was early 80’s). He said we don’t need to use those sorts of places, your ma can cook.We did have fish+chips from the chipper regularly tho!Shout out to people who don't know what the opposite of in is.8

Do you mean all you can eat breakfasts? I can think of some possibilities depending on what restaurant you mean. When you pay for an adult breakfast at a certain chain you get 2 (maybe 3) children eat free upto age 16. It might be that this is filling up both adult and kids for the day for under £10 and no energy cost. The other possibility is when DH has stayed away in some hotels, he's also come across parent breakfasting with children in school uniform and realised there are homeless families being put up in temporary B & B accommodation. My DD had an absolutely horrendous last 18 months of school. Something she's only starting to process now at 19.5. When we were on our 3rd school in yr11, I did indeed give the bribe that once a week she could have a Maccys breakfast, because I was so desperate for her to stay in education and gain some qualifications (she did - it was worth it). So it might just be this is a treat for whatever reason.ladyholly said:I, for one, dont understand the need of many people to need drinks all the time. Re water - yes, when I was at school you went without except for lunchtime and maybe a water fountain at playtime but some years ago it was shown that being able to drink water throughout the day aided concentration. My kids are 22 and 19 and they weren't the first lot told to bring in a water bottle when they started school. It will be a continuation of that, plus a lot of workplaces offer chilled water (my previous 3 employers have) so makes sense to take in a water bottle and take the water on offer there.
I've been in Italy with DD for a mini break before she leaves this weekend, so missed the news. From the bits I've picked up I'm only thankful our mortgage has less than 6 months left on it.12 -
Ah that was the only time we were ever given it was when we were poorly and even then it was the original stuff and I have never been able to drink it since.kethry said:sammy_kaye18 said:...or who are giving their primary school children energy drinks / sports drinks etc. Absolutely no need. I dont think mine have ever had them (sports drinks) ...Agreed! the only time I ever had them as a child was when I was ill (as in vomiting) And then it was boiled lucozade, boiled to take the bubbles out and then Mum would let it get cold and give it to me warm (her reasoning was replacement of fluids and salts). Regular lucozade might be okay, drunk the way it's meant to (If you like that kind of thing) but boiled? Horrible stuff, do not recommend!Time to find me again10 -
Been to SA today - had a new homeless chap visit us. When I went into town - I saw his sleeping area - in a shop doorway. I went to a local garden centre which has a shoes area - my feet are cold in sandals now. I need some ankle boots to wear with casual SA uniform. I had to order some boots so it will be cold feet for a while longer. Had some heavy rain showers here today and it is chilly.Decluttering Achieved - 2023 - 10,364 Decluttering - 2024 - 8,365 August - 0/45

My Nana (my Gran's elder sister and the lovely lady who brought me up as my Mum worked full time) who died in 1970 used to stir lemonade and lucozade with a rolled up strip of newspaper to remove the bubbles.kethry said:sammy_kaye18 said:...or who are giving their primary school children energy drinks / sports drinks etc. Absolutely no need.
