Todays shopping was a game of two halves. I got 2 bags of cheap potatoes and some chicken gougons on YS but there were big gaps on the shelves and no salad stuff at all. Luckily OH will eat whatever I put in front of him but I feel for families with autistic kids who like to keep to a set diet or those with special dietary needs.
I added a couple of tinned pies and cheap jar sauces for quick meals as I’ve let my stocks run down a bit. When I get to a certain level I like to start adding bits again.

For me garlic purree is a must, plus of course chilli powder, paprika and cinnamon.cooking oil ,excellent
and I like extra balsamic vinegar and some olive oil as well Its all things that will keep Ok .Toiletries I thought perhaps some paracetamols caplets as at the moment they are only 29p in a lot of places I always have at least 12 UHT carton in stock as I use that frequently plus evaporated milk I may get some powdered milk Marvel or similar if I see some . I am decluttering one of my spare rooms at the moment and off loading a good few books to the charity shop so I was thinking I could use the bookshelve in there once cleared to stash things that will keep long term . its basically money in the bank as it will all be used at some point plus it saves trekking around shops in the bad weather looking for stuff There was a programme on the radio today on one of the stations and a chap was saying that the longer the war in Europe goes on the shortages will start to bite in the Uk. We won't run out of food ,but things will get increasingly more expensive. He was also talking about the problems in Sri Lanka with the civil unrest and how their tea production has plummeted
so I may find have to find a spot for some boxes of tea bags as I do like my cuppa.
I remember my late Mother telling me when I was small how when WW1 started her Mum (My Granny ) stocked up as soon as she coould which helped them no end .
My late Mum was born in 1900 and was a young teenager when it started .She married my late Dad in 1935 and he was 10 years older than her .
Sadly so many of her generation never came back from the front .
In 1939 when the next war was imminent she stocked up with as much as she could find that would last for awhile ,never realising that the war would carry on for 6 years and rationing for 14
I'm not saying we are in the same situation but although we are not at war ,and I hope we never will be there will be shortage of things I think ,but more so the prices will rise accordingly.
So a little bit of forward planning might be of use to us all. Even if its only a couple of things a week tucked away for that just in case moment

Jackie O - might be a good idea to get some tinned veg - peas, sweetcorn, green beans, carrots, potatoes etc to add some vitamins to the diet. Not keen on tinned veg but would rather eat that than not have any veg at all!
Might also be worth getting a few tins of stewed meat which could be used to make pies. I'd also consider tomatoes and baked beans worth stocking up on.
Noodles and couscous are also very useful for carbs.4 -
Are we just talking edibles? Cos I keep good stocks of cleaning stuff (bleach, washing up liquid, vinegar, soda crystals, wash powder etc). Also shampoo+conditioner, soaps, toothpaste and brushes etc for me and himself. And loo rolls, tampax, baby wipes…
For edibles, don’t forget salt and pepper!Shout out to people who don't know what the opposite of in is.7 -
I have a pretty good stock of all the things already mentioned but am finding that, as well as building a cushion against potential shortages, I'm also looking at ways of combating price increases. As an example, fresh milk is still the cheapest option per litre - at the moment - but it's gone up by a heck of a jump over the last couple of months. We prefer fresh milk but that doesn't stop me from stocking long life, dried, coconut or evaporated milk as well.
I normally have 4 pts delivered one week and shop locally for another 2 pts the following week. I've now changed to having 6 pts delivered, pour 2 pts into another container and freeze that. The saving is 51p per fortnight, £13.26 pa. And that's just on one item!
So, it's a case of shopping around (if you can) to find where something is cheapest, finding an alternative product or change how you do things.
On a different note, a couple of weeks ago I received two coupons for packs of free incontinence pads. Luckily, I don't need these but, thinking of others who do, I've used the coupons and have put the packs into the SM collection box for the women's refuge.Be kind to others and to yourself too.8 -
joedenise I have one cupboard at the moment virtually full of tinned stuff at the moment as I did a good stock up when I came back from my holiday last week. But I shall alternate with a few extra tins when I see them on offer I have about 6 tins of chickpeas that I got about a month ago which we 45p a tin I saw in Tescos that they are now 70p so I'm pleased that I got them when I did. It may be only sometimes just pennies on tins stuff but when you add them up its whats putting an extra pound or so on your bills. I know I must get some extra pepper as I can't do without pepper on my food I keep a jar of salt in, but only really use it to salt my garden path in the snow

Evap milk has gone onto the list

@YorkLass - thanks for reminder about coconut milk. That will be going on my list. I usually use the Light one but recently started using the full fat one and diluting it. Now get 800 ms for the price of 400mls! I only use 100mls at a time so the rest gets frozen in a silicon muffin pan and then transferred to a plastic bag.
I often only use 100 or 200mls of passatta so again freeze the rest of the box in a muffin pan until solid and then transfer to a plastic bag. Certainly helps stretch some items.

It does indeed. I think that's what I was getting at when I said to do things differently and I'll be diluting my coconut milk now.
