Devizes is lovely, but might need to stretch your budget for your wish list.carolbee said:Thanks, have quite a definite list. 2/3 bedroom bungalow. Lounge overlooking south facing garden, off road parking. Able to walk to library, local shops, nice places to walk and cycle.
got 3 days in early Feb to visit
You did ask! 😀😀
Thanks allYou will get all that you want in Warminster, especially if you don’t mind living on a housing estate. There are really nice walks and cycle rides around the area. It also has a nice park. Good places to eat in town plus a Waitrose and a Morrisons.Good links to the A303, and short drives to prettier towns over the borders, for days out Shaftesbury for Gold Hill, and Frome.Villages don’t offer the library and local shops, so that counts them out.as the previous poster said Westbury is rough around the edges and wouldn’t be my choice none of the charm of Devizes.1 -
"Anyone live in these places that can give an insight. Budget of £300k" I should add I have lived in Chippenham for 15 years (Now a village 5 miles north), south wales 5 years, London 5 years , Essex ,and Bristol 25 years. Certainly cannot see myself leaving the cotswolds any time soon and certainly to non of the previous locations.2

The quiet roads more than compensate. Once you know your way around, far better than sitting on congested A roads and motorways.AFF8879 said:Also one thing to note in general (I don’t live in Wiltshire myself but my parents live in one of those towns so I visit regularly) - driving in Wiltshire can be a nightmare. Lots of narrow country roads, hardly any roads have street lighting so driving in the dark is always tiring due to having to concentrate so hard…. Plus Wiltshire has no landmarks, it’s basically just nothing but fields so without a sat nav you will have no hope in hell

Your budget may find this wish list challenging.carolbee said:Thanks, have quite a definite list. 2/3 bedroom bungalow. Lounge overlooking south facing garden, off road parking. Able to walk to library, local shops, nice places to walk and cycle.2 -
I would suggest Chippenham as a nice market town, good train links, easy access to M4, good schools (if that matters to you) and you should find something in budget. Quite a few new build estates going up if that's your thing. I grew up there and it was a nice enough place and always felt pretty safe. It's now got more restaurants and bars too, and some great pubs in nearby villages.1

We live in Dorset, nearest bit of Wiltshire is 5 miles away. We’ve not had problems with driving there. If you spot Stonehenge, one of the world’s most famous landmarks, you’ll have a rough idea where you are

Perhaps not using the Sat Nav would assist is gaining a better sense of direction.AFF8879 said:I meant purely in the sense that it makes driving without a sat nav challenging as you have very limited points of reference. It wasn’t an attack on Wiltshire’s cultural integrity
