Used car kaput after 5 months
My dad bought a used car 5 months ago. He took it to the garage today and they’ve said the suspension is shot along with various other things and it’ll cost £3k to repair, which is what he paid for it. He tried to contact the dealer but they have gone out of business. The car was sold with a 12 month warranty with Handler Protect. Do you think it’ll be covered?

Get on their website, find their contact details and contact them.0

THe only warranty claim I ever made on a used car bought from a dealer was managed *by* the dealer. As you say your dad’s supplying garage is defunct, he should try contacting the warranty provider direct with the issues you say *another* garage has found. Only their reply will genuinely tell whether the problem is covered.

He’s contacted them and they want details of what is wrong. From some of the reviews online they seem to make it very difficult to make a claim, asking for photos of the inside of broken parts etc.Archie_Duke said:THe only warranty claim I ever made on a used car bought from a dealer was managed *by* the dealer. You'd need to check with the warranty company to see whats covered.midge406 said:My dad bought a used car 5 months ago. Who did he take it to, a main dealer?
Shock absorbers and springs arent expensive for an average car, and i'd be surprised if all four shocks and springs where "shot" to the point of failing MOT
Whats the actual faults?0 -
You'll probably find the warranty excludes wear and tear items so what was the sudden mechanical failure resulting in the car needing to go into the garage?midge406 said:

£3000 of suspension repair is a bit on the steep side. What car is this?0

Also, how old is it, how many miles on it and how much was paid? If it’s a 1k dealer sale that’s not the same expectation as a 20k dealer sale….0

It’s a 2008 Citroen C5. I think around 80,000 miles on the clock.walwyn1978 said:Also, how old is it, how many miles on it and how much was paid? If it’s a 1k dealer sale that’s not the same expectation as a 20k dealer sale….0 -
The suspension had seemed off to him so he took it to the garage to get it checked out. I’m not sure of the exact faults but he said they are saying the suspension could snap at any point and there are multiple faults.DB1904 said:

These clearly haven’t been caused in 5 months but I’m worried they will say it’s not covered or that it’s the dealers fault. Think the dealer put on a dodgy MOT.

Thats a moot point as the dealer has gone out of business.walwyn1978 said:Also, how old is it, how many miles on it and how much was paid? If it’s a 1k dealer sale that’s not the same expectation as a 20k dealer sale….1
