You can buy a second hand smartphone such as a galaxy A40 for as little as £30 on eBay

Online security such as two factor authentication doesn't require an app, if a firm chooses to go down that route, use another.

Emotive language like "stole" your pension doesn't add anything to the debate, pensioners will get 3.1% increase on the state pension, more than many people who are employed are getting. The triple lock was suspended as the average earnings figure went crazy due to people coming off furlough and was artificially high (8%+).

Here is an extract from the email. Notice they say ALL credit cards will have to do this

Some changes are coming to the way you make purchases online using your credit card. These are being introduced by us and all UK card issuers to make sure your online purchases are as safe and secure as possible.

    What's happening?

Soon you might get asked to perform a new security check during the online checkout process. You'll be asked to open your credit card app to verify the online purchase you're making. You won't be able to verify your online purchases through your online servicing account.

If you don't get asked, don't worry. There may be some instances where we don't ask you to verify your purchase.

Verifying your purchases in the app will replace the one-time passcodes that are sometimes sent by text message or email today.

That isn't anything to do with what I said. 2FA can be a phone call, text, card reader or even using an app yes, it doesn't mean a firm has to have an app or indeed require you to use one. Lloyds do occasionally ask me to verify in the app if buying online but I set that

It's good news if card companies are ceasing to rely on text messages for 2FA.  As GCHQ warned, SMS is not a secure system.  The card companies are relying on the telcos' security, something over which they have no control: it's only as good as the girl in the shop or call centre that lets you switch to them.  There have been several cases of people losing large sums of money because their mobile number has been hijacked.
Far better to verify purchases with a card reader.  You have to have your card with you and know its PIN, so a fraudster would be out of luck.  No need for a phone or signal, so why doesn't the dozy FCA insist that all providers use this?

But how can I use a card reader when I'm out and about...

Had a card reader to access HSBC account. Used to break on a regular basis in my wallet. Could not stand being sat on 🤣

Barclays have Mobile PIN Sentry so you can still use your phone but in a more secure way than a text message.  AFAIK the one time code is only for online purchases, not for when youre in shops and stores.
