Enforcing aps to keep your credit card

Options
I am concerned that credit card companies are now saying I need an ap in order to use them as they seem to be getting rid of online
check ins.  I only have an old mobile phone given to me by my granddaughter which is fine at the moment but soon I will need an ap which my phone does not do.  I can't afford a smart phone especially after this government have stolen my pension increase
by refusing to honour their pledge on the triple lock followed by the massive increase in gas & electric. It now appears the credit card companies are now making it worse for pensioners by making it virtually impossible without a smart phone to have a credit card.
Can anyone suggest a solution?

You don't really need any solution yet, as no-one's asked you to make a change.

If and when it does happen then one option is to ask one of your children to install the app for you on their phone, which they can let you access if you ever need to take any action.

There's not much point though in worrying about something that may never happen. As the Catholic prayer goes,

God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
The courage to change the things I can
And the wisdom to know the difference.

I understand from one of your previous posts that you own an investment property which you could sell; so I don't know that it's accurate to say that you can't afford a new phone.

Edited to add, you asked for help with your Samsung S10 Smartphone a while back...
  • Yes, get a card that doesnt require an app.

Vanquis dont as one example (yes its web login to get statements etc), there will be loads of others.

As for them making it worse for pensioners, well no, you are assuming that all pensioners are either a) poor, b) Luddites and unable to keep up with change, or c) both, I can assure you this certainly isnt the case.

Actually I have been asked by Virgin who were not much use when I requested a solution leading to me closing the account.

This morning I received an email from Ja Ja telling me I needed an ap which will come into force soon.

The request for help on the Samsung was actually for someone else who needed it at the time. I have a old Alcatel donated to me by my Granddaughter.

The comment from Emma tells me that people are not aware that ALL credit cards will introduce this system sooner or later as Ja Ja informed me it is a requirement being introduced to increase security.

  • Are they? Oh well, it wont affect me in the slightest then.

Challenge JaJa to provide evidence of this then, as there is no such legislative or regulatory requirement.

Online purchases and access to online account management are required to introduce two factor authentication, but in itself that doesn't necessitate the use of an app, although some card providers are choosing to discontinue their browser-based online account access in favour of an app....

So just how are people with no mobile or internet going to manage?
    Same as before.
    Just request paper statements. 👍
    Life in the slow lane
  • Online security such as two factor authentication doesn't require an app, if a firm chooses to go down that route, use another.

Emotive language like "stole" your pension doesn't add anything to the debate, pensioners will get 3.1% increase on the state pension, more than many people who are employed are getting. The triple lock was suspended as the average earnings figure went crazy due to people coming off furlough and was artificially high (8%+).

Here is an extract from the email. Notice they say ALL credit cards will have to do this

Some changes are coming to the way you make purchases online using your credit card. These are being introduced by us and all UK card issuers to make sure your online purchases are as safe and secure as possible.

    What's happening?

Soon you might get asked to perform a new security check during the online checkout process. You'll be asked to open your credit card app to verify the online purchase you're making. You won't be able to verify your online purchases through your online servicing account.

If you don't get asked, don't worry. There may be some instances where we don't ask you to verify your purchase.

Verifying your purchases in the app will replace the one-time passcodes that are sometimes sent by text message or email today.

  • I would kindly suggest that the wording of that email is, quite frankly, b0llox. Find an independent source that verifies the above.
  • As above, that email is simply wrong.

Returning to your original question though, you have an investment property worth hundreds of thousands of pounds, so it's simply not true to say that you can't afford a smartphone.
