So Energy - phone call about changing tariff

Hi all,

I've just had a phone call from my current energy provider, So Energy wanting to discuss new tariffs that I could move to when my fix comes to an end at the end of March.
They caught me off guard and said these prices are only available on the day, and I would have to confirm now whether I want to take advantage of them.
I asked them to call on Monday instead so I have some time to do some research, and ask you guys!

Can anyone advise, what sort of rates would they need to provide to make it worthwhile fixing?

My current tariff is the So Carrot Essential v2:

Electricity:

Unit rate 16.34 p/kWh

Standing charge 22.05 p/day

Gas:

Unit rate 2.86 p/kWh

Standing charge 22.05 p/day

The current SVR is below,  but I think this is the amount that will increase substantially:

Electricity:

Unit rate 20.03 p/kWh

Standing charge 23.76 p/day

Gas:

Unit rate 3.96 p/kWh

Standing charge 26.11 p/day

Any help would be really appreciated, as I feel a little unprepared for such a huge price rise!

I thought this selling practice has been banned for some time?
  • sounds like a scam. pressure selling is a major red flag. on principle I'd tell them to do one!

I'm not sure about that, but it definitely did make me feel quite uncomfortable.

Agreed, I'd be very wary.  They might well have asked for your Date of Birth 'just for security', perhaps also your DD details and then used that together with other info they've already gleaned about you to scam you.
Sadly we're likely to see much more of these scams in the coming weeks, especially as it's easy for a scammer to find out who your energy companies are.  Most people are wise to the well worn 'Microsoft' and 'BT Technical Department' scams, but an attractive energy offer apparently from your own energy company may not arouse people's suspicions.
The golden rule is never to believe that an incoming call is from the organisation it claims to be, even if the calling number appears to be correct.  To progress anything, always take them 'through security' or call back to the number shown on a statement, bank card etc., preferably from a different number.
I'm always annoyed that no bank seems to have a system whereby they can verify themselves without breaching data protection regulations, and they always seem very surprised when challenged.

Ok, I appreciate the advice. It's funny, I don't think of myself as someone who would fall for these scammers, but maybe they are just more devious than I am!
I think I will call them this afternoon and ask if that is something they are doing.
    Thanks
  • I'm on So Clementine, which was fixed at the start of November, so I'm paying a bit over the odds now on the grounds I'll be better off next year.

    Rates are:

    Electricity:

    Unit rate 24.33 p/kWh

    Standing charge 24.38 p/day

    Gas:

    Unit rate 5.94 p/kWh

    Standing charge 26.11 p/day

Ok, thanks, that doesn't look too far off the variable rate, so might be worth a fix. I'll see what they say on Monday and if they can offer anything similar to those numbers.
    Thanks again!

The rates someone fixed at in November is irrelevant to fixed rates offered now, this might give a bit of a clue, subject to regional differences and possibility of launch of new tariff at any time.  2 year fixed rate has £40 exit fee per fuel, personally I would do nothing default to So Flex.

Yes, you are right, however, I just wanted something as a vague comparison. Thanks,
