I have had GAP policies with ALA twice before and I will highly recommend them. The first time, they promptly refund un-used premium after selling the car and I actually made a claim on the second and it took less than 5 days from claiming to receiving the payout.

The others may be just as good but I have no personal experience of the claim process and you cant know how good an insurance company is until you try to make a claim.
  • Be wary of over searching.  Any company doing a lot of business will have some negative reviews.  People are also mire incentivised to give negative than positive reviews.

I used all 3: Shortfall.co.uk, GapInsurance123.co.uk, TotalLossGap.co.uk and also ALA with 25% off. Never claimed on anything. One of the first three was really good to deal with and were happy to move policy to another car I bought. And I recently cancelled policy under TotalLossGap.co.uk and got some money back by cheque. At the moment I have active policy with ALA.

I had around 10 cars in last 10 years and bought gap policies for all of them. Some cars leased, some owned, so different types of policies and different length.

I noted couple of years ago, that someone had problem with getting back deposit money from PCH gap with Gapinsurance123 underwritten by Motorway Direct.
Thanks, do you mean someone had trouble claiming their gap insurance with Gapinsurance123?

Yes, someone had problem with getting back their initial payment on PCH Gap. If you're not leasing the car, it's not relevant. Some policies for Contract Hire offer to cover initial payment. And in this case, underwriter was questioning definition of "deposit" and initial payment. I copied posts from Pistonheads.com forum for future reference for my self.

Here's the quote from original post, I never saved link to it, just text:
"I'm going through the total loss of a lease car process at the moment, and in my case, the insurance company and lease company agree with each other's valuation of the car. The insurance company has paid the lease company that value less my excess, which is the only balance outstanding

I would ordinarily have lost my initial rental, but covered it up to 2k via my gap insurance policy. This is where I am having the issue, as the gap insurance provider is trying to weasel out of paying that due it not being a "deposit".

The broker I bought the policy through has assured me that the policy sold was (and still is being sold) to cover the initial rental, and is clearly advertising it that way"

Company was Gapinsurance123 and underwriter Motorway Direct.
