Windscreen repair counted as an accident to declare despite doing it under my windscreen cover

Options
Hi all,
I’m aware that we have to disclose a windscreen repair claim on our car insurance when going for a new quote.
I’m just wondering if this is still the case in this scenario. I had windscreen cover with my car insurance. I got a chip in the windscreen and reported it to them, and they repaired it free. All good.
But when I went to re-insure I was told this counted as an at fault claim and that I needed to disclose this for the next 5 years.
I thought that as windscreen cover was with my policy, and my NCB was unaffected, that this wouldn’t be a claim that would need disclosed. I would have paid for the windscreen myself and not bothered getting windscreen cover if I’d known this, as I’m basically paying it all back now on increased insurance due to having to disclose an at fault claim/accident.
Any thoughts?

  • I think this happened to us a few years ago when changing insurer.

We forgot* to disclose a "free" windscreen chip repair just 6 months previously and we nearly had the insurance cancelled!  It was several years ago now, but I think it was recorded as an "at fault" incident.  I think we queried it and were told it was "at fault" because no third party had been at fault so the insurer could not recover the cost from anybody.

As I say, it was years ago and I'm not sure now of the details.

    * we didn't disclose it as a "claim" as we didn't realise that it was a claim.  Looking back now it should have been obvious to us but it wasn't.
  • Can't see what your complaint is tbh. You bought an insurance policy that included windscreen cover, and then made a claim on the policy. The repair wasn't free - someone has paid, just not you.

It’s a query. I’m already aware of what you have said. If you have nothing sensible to contribute then don’t reply. Put you on ignore too, so I don’t see any more pointless replies. 👋

No need for that. I was just responding to what I read as a pointless question and that you were looking for someone to tell you that you're in the right somehow. Claim on a policy? Expect your NCB to be affected.
Not my problem if you got out of bed the wrong side this morning.

Thanks. That’s exactly what happened to me. I went to get a new quote, didn’t realise I was meant to mention this, and almost got a cancel. It’s daft. There is no point in getting windscreen cover (certainly not if you pay extra, and even for free) if they count it as a claim to disclose for 5 years, and an at fault one too.
It’s just a nonsense. If they offer a windscreen cover that doesn’t count as a claim you have to disclose, that would be a good idea.

As a matter of interest  is there any particular reason why you think anyone here will be better informed than the insurance company themselves and why you don't ask them?

Hmmm. Another one. Guess you are his buddy. If you have nothing to contribute don’t reply!
    On ignore too 👋

In my experience declaring windscreen claims (my husband had 4 claims in 5 years) made absolutely no difference to our insurance premiums - certainly our NCB wasn't affected.

It didn’t affect my NCB too. That’s good to know it doesn’t affect the insurance premiums. That was my main concern really. Cheers

Yes - I think that's how it worked for us too.  I'm certain it didn't affect our premiums or NCB.

AIUI it's a technical "at fault" because there's no-one for the insurer to recover their costs from.  I'm not sure they use it when assessing premiums etc...
