I can recommend NFU Mutual. Not the cheapest, but they are one of the few car insurance companies that I have confidence will be there for you and have your best interests in mind in the event of a claim.

Please can someone recommend a good company to get a quote from directly and/or a quotation website as my wife is getting a new car and wants to change insurance company?

I never know what's best when using a quotation website and getting a quote and going though it that way or to then see who gives the best quote and then to goto the company directly?

    Advise most appreciated please

    Define your opinion of good?

Many will say cheap, & hope to never have to use any of their services.

Why change company, may get a good deal just changing car if mid term & then look at renewal time.
If you are mid term, cancelling will lose that year NCD being accrued & odds on will cost to cancel.

"I've been with Direct Line for a few years now - I always shop around every year, but their prices are always very competitive.  I've never had to make a claim, but their customer services have always been excellent when I've needed to make changes (adding temporary drivers, changing cars and whatnot)."

Please don't hit anyone as you may have satisfied your legal requirements the cheapest way possible but they are shocking and the everyone else pays for your savings !!!!!
An interesting opinion.  They're not the cheapest (nor the most expensive), and like I say I've never had to make a claim.  But their customer service always seems to be good, and I figured they're one of the "big names" so should be OK.  (No, I don't work for them lol!)

caprikid has something of an axe to grind with regard to Direct Line...

I've used DL in the past, but never gone through a claim with them (or any other motor insurance company)

My wife was with DL a few years ago and needed to involve them in a claim. On that occasion the whole process was very straightforward, and settled satisfactorily with zero fuss or aggro.

IIRC she went elsewhere when she changed car, and their quote was no longer competitive.

One money saving option is to go via those irritating meerkat people and save significant amounts on meals out and 2 for 1 cinema tickets. We save a minimum of £200 a year, as we eat out most weeks and enjoy a 25% discount at the pub we use.

We used Direct Line for years, household, vehicles and travel. Had a horrible experience with them being obstructive with a travel claim during the pandemic, complained and took it to the ombudsman, but eventually it was paid out and I dropped the complaint. Saw large increases in my remaining policies and moved away with them all - possibly they decided they didn't want me after my battle.

Farming friends are very loyal to NFU mutual as mentioned above, but they don't tend to be the cheapest.
  • When you get your renewal quote, always review it online, and go as if you are going to change a detail even if you aren't.  This will cause the site to recalculate your quote, usually cheaper, but you'll still get any discounts you've amassed!
I've changed my job and I'll be driving farther to work.  My quote with Hastings dropped £40, and from what I can see (because I always check), it's about £20 cheaper than any like-for-like quote from a reputable broker!

I used a comparison site and Tesco were one of the cheaper ones.
I had to phone and check something and they were prompt and polite. Very helpful. British based call centre.
I had to phone again later and same response.
Then the price went up a lot so I moved.

I won't ever go with Churchill for car again. Someone reversed into my stationary car while I was leaning on the horn to alert them. It was a car park so everyone saw and I had witnesses.
3 months later someone on the phone said my claim had been sitting on the wrong dept.
Then, you might as well forget it now. You can imagine my response!

I can rise and shine - just not at the same time!
