Please can someone recommend a good company to get a quote from directly and/or a quotation website as my wife is getting a new car and wants to change insurance company?

I never know what's best when using a quotation website and getting a quote and going though it that way or to then see who gives the best quote and then to goto the company directly?

    Advise most appreciated please

As per Grumpy Chap's comment, there is a guide on MSE for this.

One thing i would add is that many of the comparison sites also have a customer rating for the insurance provider including pay out rate if there is a claim, etc.

Personally, i use the MSE ordering of checking for the best prices, i check any rating there is and i try to stick to a brand i've heard of.
Thanks, can you name a comparasion website which gives you a good rating on paying out on claims?

Compare the market give you info along the bottom of each quote such as -

"We pay out 98% of claims* and you can claim online or over the phone 24/7 Read More"
"1st CENTRAL is rated as "Excellent" on Trustpilot Read More"

    Or

"LV= are a Which? Recommended Provider for Car Insurance, 2021 Read More"

They also have an "About this Provider" button for each which gives key fact info.

GoCompare have a 'View Details' to the right of each quote which once the popup appears has a "Reviews" TAB.

They also have a Defacto rating against each policy.

Confused.com have a Defacto rating against their policies

Defaqto is an independent financial research company. It independently assesses all products in the market, and gives each a rating from 1 to 5 stars based on the quality and comprehensiveness of the features and benefits it offers. This helps you see, at a glance, where a product sits in the market.

A 1 star-rated product is a basic product, with a low level of features and benefits. Whereas 5 star-rated products provide a comprehensive range of features and benefits.

"I've been with Direct Line for a few years now - I always shop around every year, but their prices are always very competitive.  I've never had to make a claim, but their customer services have always been excellent when I've needed to make changes (adding temporary drivers, changing cars and whatnot)."

Please don't hit anyone as you may have satisfied your legal requirements the cheapest way possible but they are shocking and the everyone else pays for your savings !!!!!

An interesting opinion.  They're not the cheapest (nor the most expensive), and like I say I've never had to make a claim.  But their customer service always seems to be good, and I figured they're one of the "big names" so should be OK.  (No, I don't work for them lol!)

I understood that the OP already had a car, which is ready for the scrapper.  Plus a shiny new Dacia arriving very shortly.

The simplest thing to do in the immediate term is probably to transfer the insurance from the old car to the new car and then do the full shopping around thing when the policy expires (by which time the OP will have an extra year NCD).  That may need a conversation with the insurer if the current car is on TPFT and the new will be fully comp, but I'd expect that type of change is doable.

Comments on MSE Forums however are materially different.

Its very rare for any motor claim not to pay out... if people are happy with the payout is a totally different question.

I have had only 1 claim for a hit and run whilst parked in my 2 month old car. New Door skin, wing and sill repair.

    The company was Hastings Direct.

I am not with them now, but stayed with them another 2 years afterwards and the premiums remained the same until I changed car and they were un competitive.

No problems at all, and I used my own preferred repairer. But there are others that will have had nightmares with Hastings so you can never tell.
  • I've been with General Accident for a few years now. When I had an at fault accident in 2018 they were very efficient with excellent customer service. When it came up to renewal I expected to be hammered, but was surprised at only a £30 increase in premium.

..just go on a comparison site and select the quote with the lowest price from a company name that you recognise the name of?
But the issue is there are big differences between each comparison site, I went on confuse, mycompare.co.uk and money supermarket and they all gave me different quotes. You need to check at least 3 to ensure you are covering all bases.
