Due back in the UK on 22nd Jan and had hoped to use the test to return lft as the day 2 lft. Alas not. Chronomics wont' refund or accept the test. So lost the original cost and had to buy 2 new test kits. A warning to others not to assume the same

On the plus side day 2 LFT are below £8 now
If you decide to travel during a pandemic, as we have too, it unfortunately comes with some risks... could be worse, you could have found your current country going onto the red list and so £2k+ to pay for a quarantine hotel1 -
Totally agree. I'm just warning others not to assume like I did. I could have left it too late to order extra tests for the passenger locator form.Sandtree said:On the plus side day 2 LFT are below £8 now

That may be true but doesn't excuse some of these companies for pretty sharp practices as highlighted by the OP. I wonder legally if a "test to return" test is actually good enough anyway to use as a day 2?Sandtree said:On the plus side day 2 LFT are below £8 now

Yes, they are the exact same test in the exact same box, I have had both from Chronomics over the past 3 months for separate trips,michael1234 said:

For a Test to return test - the provider only has to a certified result to the person who took the test.
For a Day 2 test provider has to collect all the person’s information and travel details. Then they also have to upload these and the test result to Public Health England with the test result within 24 hours.
Most providers charge more for this additional service .1 -
Whilst the tests are the same everything surrounding the tests is different... day 2 test requires a code generating that goes onto a governmental database, results have to be passed to the government, fit to fly requires a certificate with particular text being issued to the tester which isnt the same as the day 2 results.michael1234 said:

Its not the vendors fault the government has changed their mind on whats required nor that the OP bought well in advance (dates when changes are going to be considered are published well in advance and theres no real need to buy more than a couple of days out) and so to say they should take the cost of changing the type of test over on the chin else its "sharp practices" is a little unfair.
As said before, travel during a pandemic comes with risks and if the worst that happens is you have to pay an extra £8 pp for some new tests I think you've gotten off fairly lightly and the amount you've been overcharged for taxis etc is likely to massively outweigh that cost.2 -
Use testingforall next time, they allow free cancellations for any reason I think. I cancelled with them because my plans changed, got a full refund within a couple of days.

Pay £17 thats refundable if requirements change or pay £5 thats non-refundable but is just as good if requirements dont change.zagfles said:Use testingforall next time, they allow free cancellations for any reason I think. Personally I'd pay less than a 1/3 and take the risk but we all have our own appetites for risk0 -
You couldn't get any reliable provider for £5 when I went, about £17 was the going rateSandtree said:

In the current state of not having to quarantine until test results are back do you care if they are reliable or not? Is it not really a tickbox exercise of getting the reference for the PLF? At the end of the day most the sellers are not making the tests and so its not as if you are more likely to get a false positive by going for a bottom end provider.zagfles said:
