Using Compatible printer ink with home printers.

Hello,

I am looking for some advice re printer ink please.

I bought a Brother printer, which broke down after 6 months, I have only printed a 400 sheets, and have used the printer 20 times. When I phoned the support desk, they told me that because I had used Compatible ink and not Brother ink, that I had invalidated the warranty.  Yet when I looked at the terms and conditions of the warranty, it did not say I could not use Compatible ink.

I did some research and was told that printer companies are not allowed to  invalidate your warranty, if you use Compatible ink catridges ?

Does anyone know if this is true, and if I have any recourse, if the Support Dept still refuse to repair the printer.

Kind regards

Paul

Although using 3rd party cartridges may not automatically invalidate the warranty, the printer manufacturer may require that you provide a report to prove that they weren't the cause.  It's also worth checking any paperwork with the 3rd party cartridges to see if they guarantee they won't damage the printer.
You may want to speak to your local Trading Standards.

    Who supplied the printer?

Can you claim against them rather than against Brother?
A man walked into a car showroom.
He said to the salesman, “My wife would like to talk to you about the Volkswagen Golf in the showroom window.”
Salesman said, “We haven't got a Volkswagen Golf in the showroom window.”
The man replied, “You have now mate".

I'm a bit confused, didn't the printer come with ink? Or had you used that before moving to the compatible inks?

What problem do you have with the printer?

I am sure I remember reading somewhere that simply using 3rd party inks doesnt invalidate the warranty for, say, a mechanical problem or a problem with the power supply etc

I think they can invalidate the warranty if there is a problem with the ink delivery system though for obvious reasons.

It may come down to what the fault is.

Sorry I can't think of anything profound, clever or witty to write here.

If the printer goes in for repair under warranty they will be able to test the ink to find out if it is original or not.

Or they could just read the sticker on it.

The manufacturer’s warranty can have any conditions they like on it. That doesn’t affect the consumer's rights against the seller.

Obviously, if the compatible ink is incompatible, that would be a get out for the seller. Sadly, once six months has elapsed, it’s up to the consumer to prove that the item was defective.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

My two brothers printers have had no problem with compatibles

The first lasted over 10years before the paper feed broke a cog
The MFC-J6530DW A3. and been fine for nearly 4 years

they do like being left on to monitor use and do periodic head clean when not used.

    How has it failed.
