Related to an isa transfer but common to all YBS accounts.
They always have two ‘account’ numbers one is 8 digits and the other 10 digits which is the 8 digit plus 2 more.

But which is which when you want to instruct another bank to transfer isa funds?

The YBS passbook has the 10 digit number at the head and says Account no. Simple then that’s the account number?!

Then lower down the page
sort code ** ** **
account number 8 digits
reference 10 digits

So now the account number at the top of page is a reference and the account number is 8 digits long.

Does this matter?

Yes because YBS will reject a form if the account details are not recorded correctly, from experience with a Nationwide transfer.
I cannot remember whether it was the eight or ten digits that was required. Just applied to new provider and used the eight digit. Tried to phone YBS but closed now.

Will chase up Monday I guess but does anyone know remember the correct answer for the ‘interchangeable’ account number that should be used?

And why don’t YBS make it easy for customers if they are sticklers for the right account number to be used but use two?

When I do a bank transfer to my YBS account the 8 digit number is the account number and the 10 digit one is put as reference so you need to give both numbers but the account number is the shorter one and the one you instruct the bank to send the money to.

  • Hi,
    does THIS help explain?
  • I opened a savings account online with Yorkshire Building Society the other day and received a letter in the post this morning which had the details required for submitting bank transfers. (I've just put a fictional account number on the screenshot from the letter YBS sent).

The 10-digit YBS account number (referred to as reference in the letter) should go in the reference field box. The 8-digit bank(?) account number is the YBS reference number minus the last 2 digits, as you've mentioned.

I've checked previous correspondence from YBS and the sort code seems to be the same throughout for all my other savings accounts with them.

  • Thanks for the suggestions.

Now the issue at hand is that Coventry BS will be requesting the ISA funds to be sent to Coventry as it were! Then it’s not so clear. YBS will use an eight digit account number for CBS  but in order for YBS to IDENTIFY my account which account number do they require? Believe me if it’s not the ‘right’ one they reject the request even though they ‘could’ work out the account from either 8 or 10 digit numbers. I gave the eight digit but now I’m thinking it’s the ten digit number they would want as that identifies me as account holder within  YBS. Which means I have to be on the blower tomorrow or Monday to YBS and CBS to amend the account number if necessary.
  • Yes, I think you need the 10 digit number for that. Especially if there was only space for 1 number on the form (not account number + reference number). There may be 99 other accounts with the same 8 digits.
Yes I do too now! The CBS form had three boxes sort code, account number and role number/reference. I filled all three and a message came up saying you can only enter code plus account OR Role number so I deleted role number 10 digits, Probably have to fill in a form to amend or cancel this application and do another. Luckily there’s a local branch I can go to on Monday if required.
  • I had that problem with YBS. I tried using sort code and account number; no good. Tried 10 digit role number; no good. Decided that YBS intended keeping my ISA forever and would not allow transfer to Coventry.

Please tell me how you resolve this. Please, please
  • I called YBS and they confirmed it is the 8 digit account number I should use, and I did, and that it is unique to me not shared with other YBS customers. The 10 digit number is an internal to YBS account number.

So in theory my giving the sort code and 8 digit account number is correct for my application. Let’s see!

Here we go! Today I received a letter from CBS saying the YBS didn’t recognise the details I gave i.e. my name DOB account number and sort code as verified by YBS CS on Monday. Transfer cancelled.

So it’s the ten digit Roll Number they require after all. Had a feeling this might happen. Went in to branch and filled in a transfer form…..
  • Thanks Yorkshire_Pud. Exactly as happened to me.  Nearest CBS branch is quite a distance for me!

CBS will send you another transfer form in the post to return to them using ten digit number. Existing CBS isa is still open just the transfer was cancelled. Phone Coventry would be my advice and ask them to walk you through filling the form after it arrives. CBS confirmed to me they need the ten digit number for it to work with YBS. Good luck!
