sorry, I’m sure this is really obvious but I haven’t done it before and I don’t know how it works. I’m with Bt, I want to switch (probably to Vodafone) do I cancel by first? Or sign up with Vodafone first?
Debt was £15,903 😬 Now £2718.14 £0 😲🥳

Sign up with your new supplier and they will sort out the switch, including terminating your existing contract.
Have you given BT the chance to match the Vodafone offer? Not likely they'll be cheaper but you never know.0 -
Oh great, thanks @flaneurs_lobster ☺️ It’s complicated because the Bt account is in my ex partners name, would they still be able to switch it?Debt was £15,903 😬 Now £2718.14 £0 😲🥳0

If your ex were to not co-operate and were to continue to pay for the BT service then you might have a problem (but would still have the use of the BT service). Hopefully this is not the case.0

Your ex needs to be persuaded to cancel. That is all.0

Thanks for your help @flaneurs_lobster, I signed up with Vodafone and they said they were going to contact bt to cancel, hopefully there aren’t any issues with the account not being in my name 😬😬😬Debt was £15,903 😬 Now £2718.14 £0 😲🥳0

Issue could be balance of contract requires paying off .

You should get a letter to the address in question from BT , addressed to the account holder ( presumably your ex ) asking if the takeover is known about , presumably that letter will go unanswered, no response to the letter will be taken by VF that the takeover is allowed , so VF start supplying service , this will be fine if you either don’t want a phone service or don’t care what the phone number allocated is, if you wanted to take the BT number with you to VF , you may hit a snag if the name is different on BT and VF and may cause the porting of the number from BT to VF to fail1

Thanks @iniltous, I have asked VF to keep the number, if they do have to change it it’s not the end of the world, I’ve never been able to remember it anyway 🤭Debt was £15,903 😬 Now £2718.14 £0 😲🥳0
