Lock size help please

Options
Hi everyone, I’m hoping you can help me please. I want to change the locks in my newly purchased house but I’m not sure of the exact sizes. It’s 80mm long which I understand but does it look like a 35/45mm barrel? It’s not as simple as removing it and taking it to screwfix unfortunately as I’m the only adult in my house!

Thanks for your help :)

The way you are holding the tape is very odd.
You have to measure from the centre of the threaded hole.

Looks rather like 40/40 to me (38/38?)

Thanks Grumbler, I only took a picture of the barrel to confirm the length of the whole thing, I didn’t realise until after that I needed to know the other measurements as well. I’ll take them back out and re-measure!

The one you're measuring is a rubbish lock which can be snapped in seconds. The one at the bottom of your picture looks like a decent secure lock.

If you're changing the external locks, replace them with decent barrels, preferably 3 star kitemarked from ABS, Ultion, or even Yale.

They will cost quite a bit more than a £5 lock from Screwfix but you'll only need to do it once and have peace of mind.

Also, if its not even, though it looks like it is, make sure you note if the exterior or interior is the longer part.  The better locks as suggested by @chrisw only have the anti-snap/drill etc on the exterior side and so clearly you dont want to accidently buy one the wrong way round so the unprotected face is to the exterior and the bells and whistles are on the interior!

Hi Chris, thanks for your reply. I put the anti snap locks on the bottom of the picture in my rented house, I’ve just removed them hoping I could put them into the new doors but aside from the fact that they’re too long, they’ve got these sticky outy half circles about halfway down the barrel which means it won’t go into the hole. Do you know of any anti snap locks that do not have any added bits on the barrel? All the 3 star ones I’ve seen seem to have these ‘bits’. I like my cars so house security is very important to me and had planned to look for anti snap locks for the house anyway.

Thanks! I had wondered why my other ones say ‘ext’ on one end

Which "hole" are you talking about? When I replaced ours which were terrible old no security feature things with 3* the old one was easy to remove/put in but the new one I had to take the handles off as some of the features couldnt pass through the hole in the handle but was perfectly fine going into the door once the handle was off.

I read something about these recently. From memory they prevent the barrel being hammered through the lock. I think if you remove the handle and fit from outside they will fit.

This is the hole I meant sandtree, I took both handles off anyway to get the old locks out and the anti snap ones I have won’t go in at all. I managed to get it through the first layer of the plastic but once it got to the metal on the inside there was no way it was going through. Maybe the doors are too old? I don’t think either front or back have been changed for many years.

Just to add, I tried from the inside and outside of the lock hole with no luck.
