Applying to renew a driving licence if you have a medical condition
There are ongoing delays with driving licence applications where further information is needed from doctors. The Department of Health and Social Care asked us to pause referring cases to allow the NHS to focus on the vaccine programme. While we are now able to resume referrals to doctors there are still delays in obtaining the information we need. We are continuing to prioritise applications for bus and lorry driving licences.
Providing you have a current driving licence and you have not been told by your doctor or optician that you should not drive, you may be able to drive while DVLA is considering your application and waiting for a response from NHS professionals.
Please check the criteria to see if you may be able to continue driving by reading the guidance leaflet ‘Can I drive while my application is with DVLA?’

The DVLA acknowledges paper application services currently have longer waiting times and it says the service is expected to recover by the end of May, with medical services expected to return to pre-pandemic levels by September.
