Upgrade Flight Ticket to get refund?

Hi, our flight back from Cape Verde with TAP Portugal is via Lisbon so currently requires a Covid test before we board the return flight.

Thinking of upgrading our Basic ticket type to Executive so it then qualifies for a refund and then requesting a refund to get money back and book a direct flight back with TUI which means we won’t need a pre-departure Covid test.

Any reason why this plan wouldn’t work ?

thanks

jason

I’m sure I have seen this asked and answered before (perhaps not with TAP).  I believe the issue and why this doesn’t work is that only the cost of the upgrade to the flexible fare gets refunded, not the initial base (Basic) fare paid.  I would suggest a good read of the terms and conditions of the fare type you intended to purchase.

You need to read the fare rules of your ticket
A random search on a TAP Basic ticket fare rules under Cancellation states:
"Any time - ticket is non-refundable. Note - In case of ticket upgrade, the original non-refundable amount remains non-refundable"
This is pretty standard for transportation otherwise nobody would purchase more expensive refundable tickets initially.
  • Ok thanks, makes sense
