2nd opinion on if I'm being overcharged or not having moved supplier
I moved from British Gas to Sainsbury by Eon (dual fuel) in Oct 2021.
The past few months, my gas bill seems to have soared (yes, I'm fully aware of price increases etc, but I'm talking kWh used, not the price).
We're using the same energy as always, but the last 2 winters have been roughly 24-28kWh per day use, and this year, having moved to Sainsbury it's shot up to 85-95kWh per day.
Now having spent hours going over the figures, I THINK I might have figured why, but I'm not an expert, so am looking for other people's opinions.
gov.uk/guidance/gas-meter-readings-and-bill-calculation
suggests for my Meter (a smart meter installed a few years back) should be roughly Meter reading x 39.5 x 1.02264 / 3.6 = kWh used.
But to me, it looks like Sainsbury are taking my Metric M3 reading as an Imperial Cubic feet one, and adding in a stage on multiplying by 2.83 (step 2).
Can anyone confirm, or point out if they think I'm wrong. I can't call them until the morning when they reopen. I think if I'm on a metric meter, they shouldn't be multiplying by 2.83.
Many thanks for any advice.

Was the previous non-smart meter a cubic foot one? Usually 4 digit, rather than the 5 digits of metric meters. Check the meter number they are quoting on the bill.

Looks to me as though you are correct and they are billing the wrong units.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I'm afraid I have no idea if the previous meter was imperial or not, but I'd imagine not as the property was on a new-build Taylor Wimpey site 10 years back. I've checked my previous gas statements from British Gas, and they DON'T have the figure multiplied by 2.83. That's only happened since moving to Sainsbury.
I'll call them in the morning & can send the photos of my meter.
The Meter number DOES match between my bill & meter though.0 -
On the most recent bill BTW, they also suggest my annual usage will now be 54,074kWh, which seems sensationally high to me.0

Actually, I think that's the original meter. There's no detail for an old meter on the meter exchange ticket. Is the index showing 5 digits, yet? If not, make sure you put the zero(s) on the front when you submit a reading, otherwise they could mistake it for a 4-digit imperial meter.

When checking the bills back earlier today, I created a spreadsheet, part of which included the actual meter readings from just over 2 years.
The only difference is British Gas showed the figures as 01177, 02683 etc, and Sainsbury show as 1177, 2683 etc, but the number do go up in sequence from old supplier to new supplier and there's no gaps or mis-reads in there.

I reckon my 4-digit theory is right then. Good news for you, when they finally sort it out!

The installation date looks like 021017? And total use since then is in keeping with the first, 6000kWh, estimate of annual use.

The installation date looks like 021017?Gas fitters are notoriously illegible writers (I used to read meters for a living). As the OP said the house is about 10 years old I took that as 2011. If it is a replacement meter the old meter details would (should) be filled in.
