is this really a thing? You could, then give it to charity....   remember what happened to Gordon Gekko............

I am not sure that there is anything here to actually sell.
The reason is, there is no indication on the Tesla website when the new Model X vehicles will become available, nor any indication as to how many reservations are in line.
So, with that information, you'd be selling the opportunity to jump the queue of ??? and received the car in ??? months less than just joining the back of the line.
There may be a sellable commodity if you were at a point whereby your car is confirmed for delivery, say March 2022, and the current lead time for new is, say March 2023.  You are missing those two key bits of information that might give your idea value.

All that is assuming you can swap the buyer, or you might have to complete the purchase and then sell the car straight away as a pre-reg.

According to the Tesla website, "your order will be considered a pre-order that you may cancel with a full refund."  That may be the best route.

People nowadays, what are they like ?

It is certainly a thing to put yourself on the waiting list for a much-anticipated/desirable car and then sell it on.
There's nothing wrong with doing that (though I never have myself).
Of course, the seller may have stipulations that the place is only assigned to the original requester, in which case the answer is no.

A lot of people seem to be guessing on here.

Let me ask the question again to those who know about Tesla: Is there a way to sell my place on the waiting list?

An online search returns the following articles - they are a bit dated and seem to be USA focused, but I can't imagine that the rules would vary greatly on geography or that they are relaxed between then and now:

    https://www.marketwatch.com/story/model-3-reservations-are-for-sale-at-4-times-the-price-2017-10-12

    https://teslanomics.co/can-i-sell-my-model-3-reservation/

    Hope that helps.

It is still not clear that you have a sellable commodity, given Tesla can cancel the order as per the website Ts&Cs:
    https://www.tesla.com/en_GB/order/download-order-agreement?redirect=no&country=GB&model_code=mx&is_presale=true

I suspect that selling the waitlist position would be captured under the following:
"No Resellers; Disconnuaon; Cancellaon. Tesla and its affiliates sell cars directly to end-users, and ask that your Vehicle is registered locally in the country indicated in the footer of this Agreement before or immediately upon delivery. We may unilaterally cancel any order that we believe has been made with a view toward resale of the Vehicle (including if, your Vehicle has not been registered within 7 days a3er delivery) or that has otherwise been made in bad faith. We may also cancel your order if we ask you for informa#on a3er you have placed your order and you do not respond to us, we determine that there was a pricing error, discon#nue a product, feature or op#on a3er the #me you place your order or if we determine that you are ac#ng in bad faith, in which case we also reserve the right to refuse any future orders for other vehicles you may place with us."

Is that really how it shows, or is that a copy/paste error? 😲

    OOPS!
Here's what it actually looks like:

I'd still say it would stop the OP from doing what is proposed (assuming the place is purchased by a complete stranger).
It is also written sufficiently flexibly that the order could probably be swapped to a close family member, for example, that is not "bad faith".
