I have been on the waiting list for the Tesla Model X for over a year, and have now bought something else.

Is there a way to sell my place on the waiting list?

Did you have to pay for a place on the waiting list? Can you not just withdraw your offer (cancel your order) and get a refund?

is this really a thing? You could, then give it to charity....   remember what happened to Gordon Gekko............
  • Your place on the waiting list is tied to your contract with Tesla.  You would have to get Tesla to agree to change the party contracted, which I can't see them agreeing to.

I am not sure that there is anything here to actually sell.
The reason is, there is no indication on the Tesla website when the new Model X vehicles will become available, nor any indication as to how many reservations are in line.
So, with that information, you'd be selling the opportunity to jump the queue of ??? and received the car in ??? months less than just joining the back of the line.
There may be a sellable commodity if you were at a point whereby your car is confirmed for delivery, say March 2022, and the current lead time for new is, say March 2023.  You are missing those two key bits of information that might give your idea value.

All that is assuming you can swap the buyer, or you might have to complete the purchase and then sell the car straight away as a pre-reg.

According to the Tesla website, "your order will be considered a pre-order that you may cancel with a full refund."  That may be the best route.

You'd be better finding a dedicated Tesla group and ask there if that is viable.

There is also a Tesla board on Pistonheads, if you join it.

Not sure if its a thing still, not sure if Tesla would facilitate it.

    Yes to both questions.

Certainly places on the Aston Martin waiting list go for thousands.

As for giving it to charideee... someone has to pay for the six and seven figure salaries that some of their leaders make:

Is there a profit if you buy the Tesla and sell it on.

Did you really pay for a place on the waiting list?
OR, did you simply pay a deposit to place the order for a car?

I don't see that both the questions asked by @Jenni_D can be answered "yes".
If you paid for a place on the waiting list and lose that money if you decide not to complete the order, then you have a sellable commodity (place).
If you paid a deposit that can be refunded and the order cancelled then you don't have the same sellable commodity.

And it's only "sellable" if the contract permits you to do so. I strongly suspect Tesla will have said that buyers cannot assign their interest to a third party.

I thought the usual practice in this sort of scenario was just to complete the purchase and then sell on the car immediately to whoever couldn't be bothered waiting.
