Providing traffic will allow I move into lane 2 to accomodate anyone joining - as someone has said * Best to just maintain a constant speed and leave the decision to the joiner* what I hate is the person who joins then insists on matching your speed - that forces me to either slow down to move back into lane 1 or put my foot down to overtake.

As others have said - the OP is trying to do the right thing.  Yes - move into Lane 2 if you can do safely.  Beware the idiots wanting to join who seem to think that everyone will do this for them...

Strictly speaking - it's the responsibility of the joining driver to adjust speed and find a gap so speeding up to let them join behind you could be misleading as could slowing down to let them in front - especially if they are trying to do the same.  Only experience helps here....
I need to think of something new here...

You can sometimes do everything right eg, move into lane 2, but you have to watch that the car joining sometimes moves straight into lane 2 having not seen you,

Well done OP for trying to do the right thing. I have one of those 'blind slip roads' near me where I join the motorway. I get infuriated by the crazy joiners who fly down the slip road when they have no idea what they are going to meet (I'm sure others can guess which cars they are driving 😉).

You mean the ones that are speeding up to meet the prevailing speed of the road they are about to join. I'd rather have someone joining the carriageway at speed then someone hesitating and joining at 40mph.
  • If you have read the highway code you'd know that no-one has right of way here, only situations where you should give way.

You driving in lane 1 do not have right of way, the person joining must give way to you i.e. speed up / slow down to join without causing you to brake / slow down. This is important as you should always be thinking about what other people are going to do and plan for eventualities

And if YOU read it you’d know that no-one EVER has right of way.

Right of way is given, not taken.
