Despite picks assertion the stats show the vast majority of people use banking apps for making payments.
It would be helpful to the discussion to identify a credible and citable source for that, rather than simply referring to "the stats"!

Edit: https://www.ukfinance.org.uk/sites/default/files/uploads/Summary-UK-Payment-Markets-2021.pdf includes general stats in its section on faster payments but without going as far as breaking down FP channels by volume or value:
In 2020 the number of people using online banking (via a computer) or mobile banking (via an app on their smartphone or tablet) continued to grow. Well over two-thirds of UK adults (72%) used online banking and over half (54%) used mobile banking. All age groups had high levels of remote banking use, ranging from 93% of those aged 25-34 to 84% for those aged over 65.

Consider that the other 2% are made via the 2 other methods. Phone & Branch,

Are you expecting me to believe that not one single person in this country ever makes a single payment through a financial institution's website?
"through a financial institution's website" is otherwise known as "online".

Just to recap, the original claim made was "98% on payments are made via online/app where I work".

Not sure why you claim @born_again's figure is pulled out of a hat, on the grounds he has not given a source, or revealed which bank exactly he is working for. What is your source for your assertions?
  • I very much doubt banks would go to the length of building one set of APIs to support a website and another set of APIs to support mobile apps. It's uncommon in other industries so why banks would do that, I'm not sure. Especially when many mobile apps are built using same the underlying technologies used to develop websites, and separation of the presentation layer or UI has been convention for a long time now.

Personal Computers have a longer shelf-life in-terms of receiving updates than phones. Particularly Android phones.

When trying to obtain remote access, you need to have full trust of that remote access providers infrastructure and software. As I've already discussed, phones and tablets are themselves challenging environments to secure. I'm not sure I feel comfortable in adding attack surface to them.

    Hello,

I'm aware that Nottinghamshire Building Society LISA holders were transferred from a website to a mobile app. Sainsbury's bank I'm sure used to offer on-line banking facilities, but are now mobile app and phone only. Both my current account providers and all my credit card providers are constantly promoting their mobile apps, and amongst them there are some features or facilities which are mobile app exclusive.

    Thanks
    CH
Not sure how accurate your information is on this. Sainburys Bank still has a website for online banking, I've just logged into it so others might be exactly the same.

Does using Apple Pay or Google Pay with a mobile phone or watch count as an app based payment?
I came into this world with nothing and I've got most of it left.
  • I can’t remember the last time I used a bank or credit card website, all my banking etc is done through apps on my phone.

One of the reasons I moved away from HSBC was due to how bad their App was.

Are you reading what was written or what you want to see?

98% covers both app AND website. That's what online means. Hardly surprising stats when branches are closing and it's far more convenient to use app. I might do 3 or 4 transfers in a day, I would never have done that in branch.
