I suppose I should have included 'if you have anything personal on it'.
Personal preference and genuine advice.  I remember at a party many years back some people got hold of their hosts unprotected PC and had an absolute hoot with installing and downloading stuff (in their drunken state they apparently thought it was funny) - he brought it in to me for repair, he was fortunate that I knew him and believed his story because if I hadn't I would have involved the police.

Asking the question is a bit like asking 'why do I need a password on anything' - it is for your own protection.
