Which flight do I claim for? Cancellation or delayed?

Hi, I’m a newbie so go gentle!
We recently had a flight from LHR-JFK cancelled within an hour of take off, we were a the gate. Do we make a claim for this flight OR the flight we were transferred to? The LHR-EWR flight was due to depart at 10.45 which went tech whilst we were sitting on the tarmac and actually departed at 15.22 (landing 4 hours and 10 mins after scheduled to). Looking for any advice, thanks in advance.

The outcome should be the same at 600 Euros each unless the reason for the delay was outside the airline's control, so I would start a claim for a delay. Did they tell you the reason, if it was weather-related then it may be slightly more difficult?0
